And now, the Atlantic Magazine discovers the "Paris Syndrome" of the Japanese...
Paris Syndrome: A First-Class Problem for a First-Class Vacation
TheAtlantic.com | Oct. 18, 2011[floatr]Image[/floatr]
***At least 20 people this summer -- most of them Japanese -- have suffered from the disorder after realizing Paris isn't what they expected***
As tourist season here in Paris winds to a close and the air once again becomes crisp, fresh, and new, we must unfortunately acknowledge that it does not end without a few casualties. Yes, this summer, like the ones that have come before it, has claimed at least 20 victims of a very particular affliction: Paris Syndrome. And though it may sound like a disease unique to freshman girls with Le Chat Noir posters everywhere, it is a serious disorder that causes tourists, especially Japanese tourists, many problems on their trip through the City of Light. And what is Paris Syndrome, exactly? Simply put, it's a collection of physical and psychological symptoms experienced by first-time visitors realizing that Paris isn't, in fact, what they thought it would be.
It is no secret that the representation of Paris in entertainment is a limited one. If the subject matter even makes it past the World War II era, one is still usually going to get a fairly idealized picture. Watching movies set in Paris leaves one with an image of the city that is quaint, friendly, affluent, and likely still in black-and-white. When we use Paris in advertisements, it is invariably some non-threateningly attractive young woman riding a bike around the side streets or skipping down the Champs-Elysées, daintily nibbling a macaroon. We imagine the whole city just smells like Chanel No. 5 and has a government-mandated mime on every corner. And nowhere is this narrow view of Paris more prevalent than in Japan, where the media portrays the city as one filled with thin, gorgeous, unbelievably rich citizens. The three stops of a Parisian's day, according to the Japanese media, are a cafe, the Eiffel Tower, and Louis Vuitton.

rereading this is hilarious

it is crazy how many people i have come across here that have lived in france for like 3months to 1 yr, but after the fact seem kind of done with it.

i have to say i feel similarly interested in spending some time there - just like japan is to some people, from the outside it seems pretty cool (from the movies ive seen, and my one week there wth my mom when i was 15 hahaha)

It's genes I suspect.

I used to love Janeane Garofalo and Janet Jackson, both non-Japanese, before they became Hollywood trash and started ruining their body with tattoos and recreational drugs. The only reason why I wouldn't go after a Western women is because of how fake they come off, and their warped sense of intimacy.

I used to think that men talked dirty and foul mouthed behind closed doors about the opposite sex. I was wrong. Western women are far worse than men, and it's shocking some of the things they say about their bf and husbands.

Asian women have a way about them; like how they care themselves that makes them so attractive. Sure, it's purely dog and pony, but it's nice and they focus on their men.

But isn't it interesting to philosophize how McTojo found out that Western womens talk dirty behind their boyfriend's and husband's backs? Did he have to cross dress for that?

The newspaper Le Parisien was showing commercials in French movie theaters a few years ago. One of them showed a pair of lost Japanese tourists imploring a Parisian for directions to the Eiffel tower. He pointed them in the direction from which they came, they thanked him profusely, and then he turned the corner, at which point you could see the tower directly ahead. And Parisian audiences thought this was pretty funny, even though the ad was supposed to be (mildly) mocking them.
There is this assumption among brainwashed kapitalist pigs that communists and socialists are only there to spread misery, while the magic of the market spread wealth to everybody...

Sidenote... my dear dad (that f#&#65505]

My rents are not religious but I'm not counting on anything. My father went through some self inflicted medical shit the past few years, has ignored all the doctor's orders, in fact, it's a miracle he's still alive, considering his behavior. All the medical problems have made him manic and he spends all day on some sort of new auction website, bidding, buying, selling everything under the sun. I dunno the financial impact of it all yet but me mom is going nuts because he has 2~3 of everything you could imagine, toasters, juicers, ovens, power tools. Who knows though, maybe he's actually making a profit...I'm just worried how long this will continue and how crazy it will drive my mother.
