About these guys

Herbie Hancock  http://www.herbiehancock.com/

Simultaneously with his work for Miles, Hancock's own solo career blossomed on Blue Note with even more classics like Maiden Voyage, Empyrean Isles, and Speak Like A Child. 1n 1966, he composed the score to Michelangelo Antonioni's film, Blow Up. This led to a successful career in feature film and television music, including Bill Cosby's Emmy-winning Hey, Hey, Hey, It's Fat Albert, and later, Death Wish, Colors, Jo Jo Dancer Your Life Is Calling, Action Jackson, Harlem Nights, and his Oscar-winning Round Midnight. After leaving Miles Davis in 1968, Hancock stepped full-time into the new electronic jazz-funk that was sweeping the world. In 1973, Headhunters, the second LP in his new deal with Columbia Records, became jazz's first platinum album. With its Sly Stone-influenced hit single "Chameleon," this album (and its follow-up Thrust) signaled, once and for all, that Herbie Hancock would not be pigeonholed or categorized.

By mid-decade, Hancock was playing to stadium-sized crowds all over the world, and had no fewer than four albums in the pop charts at once. In total, Herbie had eleven albums in the pop charts during the 1970s. What's even more remarkable about Herbie's 70s output is the inspiration and inexhaustible supply of samples he provided for the generations of hip hop and dance music artists to follow, almost twenty years after these recordings were at their peak popularity. But it would not be the only time in his career that his work would have such an influence.

Wayne Shorter  http://launch.yahoo.com/ar-263565---Wayne-Shorter

Though some will argue about whether Wayne Shorter's primary impact on jazz has been as a composer or as a saxophonist, hardly anyone will dispute his overall importance as one of jazz's leading figures over a long span of time.

This seems to be kind of like a secret concert. They're playing a couple days later with Santana but this is a chance to see the legendary members of the old Miles Davis group without Santana.

Well, they're playing with Santana on the 2nd but the show tonight isn't advertised on Hancocks website. When the Moonies start putting on free concerts with real jazz legends I'll let you know.

The concert was cool. I was surprised at how abstract the music they played was. 10,000 people showed up. That was pretty surprising as well. They didn't preach any religious mumbo jumbo just a few pro-peace things (it is related to Hiroshima so what do you expect).

Beck's a Scientologist/

Beck has recently become a Scientologist. His wife, the actor Marissa Ribisi, is a member of the church-cult and some hold that Beck was brought up as a Scientologist before lapsing for a decade in his 20s.

They've been playing similar repetoire together since around the time I saw them perform at Opera City promiting their duo album in 1998. No question that these guys have never felt constrained to play anything like they played in the past. On the other hand, when they got started with this thing in 1998, it was the beginning of Wayne's return to playing acoustic music - thank god - after like 25 years (with a few exceptions like VSOP in the early 80s). Wish I could have made it out to hear them (damn it, AK, next time give us more than 12 hours notice!!!)

Herbie's been a Buddhist since the 70s, and I think Wayne got started a little later. But I never remember seeing it directly or indirectly mentioned in their music, and only rarely in interviews. I don't think the Church of Buddhism ( ) has got their hands in the pockets of their celebrity adherents, unlike some of the other groups mentioned in this thread.

Soka Gakkai used to have a lot more international famous names attached but the ranks started to thin out considerably after Aum Shinrikyo hit. I don't know many of the faces on their current roster. Tina Turner, Bryan Adams, Suzanne Vega, Stevie Wonder, and George Chikaris (West Side Story star) all used to be mentioned as members but they have either severed ties or taken a low profile. Soka Gakkai had/has absolutely no qualms about using celebrity power to attract followers and raise money.

All that aside, Herbie Hancock is a great musician.
