Things to do in Nagoya when you're DEAD(tm)

Postby Tsuru » Mon Jul 11, 2005 12:54 am

I'll be in Nagoya from the 7-28 to 8-17, staying with the missus in Kita-ku and looking forward to doing some exploring of the city and surroundings. Unfortunately she still has to go to her 8-6 job during the weekdays, so I was hoping you guys could offer me some advice on what to do and what to see when I'm down there on my own. :? :P

Also, I'm looking for a good photography shop as I'm planning to get a Olympus C-8080 as well as some extra stuff (filters, tripod, bag) to go with it as well... not sure if they have all that at the BIC Camera near the station ;) Photography is kind of a hobby of ours, and I am planning to do some shooting when I'm there. So I guess I'm also looking for great sights in the area to capture as well... 8O :D

For the camera, try Bic Camera out the back of the JR station. Some places in Osu Kannon do OK deals, but Bic Camera has a good point card system which means it usually works out cheaper.

For things to do, just have a look at one of the magazines that lists local events etc.

I rarely find that the point card system works out cheaper than going to a smaller shop that has good prices. I also refuse to buy camera stuff from BIC in Osaka (don't know about other locations) as they refuse to open the box and let you check the product before you buy it.

The points are a scam because (of course) you have to use them in BIC. This means you end up using them to buy another over-priced BIC item. Run the numbers, it's cheaper to buy two lower-priced items than one over-priced item and then use points to buy another over-priced item. The only items I can see making sense to buy at BIC (or Yodobashi) are Apple products. Apple fixes the prices everywhere so getting 10% in points is actually a discount.

Just my 2 yens' worth.

Last time I went to the BIC on the Shinkansen side of Nagoya station, and got myself a G55 wordtank for cheap and with an additional 10% discount... still got the pointcard. So I think BIC is ok. ;)

Thanks for your tips so far... keep-em coming :D And if anyone thinks their event or location is not good enough, consider this: some of the most exciting things I have planned are a visit to the Toyota factory and the new airport... you guessed it, I'm an engineer. Even my girl thinks I'm crazy for wanting to go there, but I think it should be interesting, especially the airport as the weather should be pretty good. :)

Shoganai.... but it's for a good cause :D

And besides... Nagoya isn't TOO bad is it? Beats the shithole I'll be landing in (Osaka) by miles anyway  Reportedly the best thing to come out of Osaka is the Nozomi to Tokyo 8O :P

Dead in Nagoya?

Postby igor » Mon Jul 11, 2005 8:02 pm

Nagoya.... Hmmm... Nice wide roads and people who like to use them.

But there's no better time to be dead in Nagoya, than July 30th! Why? Because that's when Stigmatic is on! Woohoo! A night of Gothic partying (don't worry, J-Gothers are really cool and no one should comment on your chop stick or Japanese skills). Japan has the best-dressed Goths in the world, and Nagoya is renowned for people placing an insane value in dressing properly. Do the math.

Stigmatic @ Nagoya P.o.d.
4F Voice Bldg., 1-23-1 Izumi, Higashi-ku, Nagoya
Saturday, July 30, 2005 (21:00 ~ next morning)
2500 adv./3000 @ door yen
Lots of DJs.
http://www.stigmatic.jp/
-- all the info you need is there.

All I can say is I hope I can time my forray into little Nagoya-town so I can scarp one of these scarce events.
I am evil, but am I evil enough?

devicenull: Thanks for the tip! I was planning on surprising my lady with some proper Western-style cooking when she gets home from work, and to be honest I've been arito worried where the hell I'm going to get the proper ingredients... this might just be the place, thanks a bunch! :D

You can always hit up the expo, or the locals call it the Banpaku or chikyuhaku. The biggest attraction this year is the preserved wooly mammoth. But I will warn you about the load of people who will be there.. mostly little bratty kids. I was just in Nagoya for work last week and I thought about hitting up the banpaku. It was horrible. There were so many people visiting that I couldn't get a hotel anywhere in Nagoya, so I had to stay in Toyohashi which was two shinkansen stations up. I ended up not going to the expo, thinking maybe next time I will even though that chance of going ever again before it is all over is very slim. I hate Aichi.

Taro Tip #232
Always go the Taro way: VIP entrance to exhibits, free parking, no lines, hospitality rooms, etc.

Rent or drop by a local hospital and "borrow" a wheelchair for the day of your Expo visit. Mo' betta, invite me to stay at your place near the Expo and I will wave my magic 1-kyu handcap ID and make all the lines and crowds go away for anyone who is my designated "helper".

Since when did good ol' Nippon become accessible and friendly towards the handicapped?

From what I heard, it's so bad at the expo that the locals get the season pass like they do in Disneyland and go there at least twice to see the whole damn thing.

[b]Let's PR Potemkin village!

Japan isn't people friendy, gimp or otherwise, but the Expo is seen as a good kabuki exercise in PR. I worked in the Tsukuba SEXPO '85 (ScienceEXPO was the original name, hee, hee) and learned all the tricks on how to beat the crowds.

Potemkin reminds me of San Serriffe (not quite the font but that's where it comes from). Taro, you must be an oji-chan by now to have worked at the Tsukuba expo.

Oh, I was ASIMO's grandfather at Tsukuba.

Actually, I'm just kidding. I was the SEE THE INFANT GEEK EAT LIVE SNAKES at the USA exhibit.

Nagoyan

Postby Somerandomgaijin » Tue Aug 09, 2005 6:44 am

Things to do in Nagoya...
Osu Kannon has a slew of otaku stores.
The Satellite Site for the Expo around Meiki, had a Star Wars (the art of star wars) exhibit.
Italian Village is new and well interesting (I guess.)
Eat Ebi Furiya~ and tebazaki,miso katsu,kishimen.
Avoid Expo.
Take a train elsewhere.
