Gays, lesbians and their friends in Japan will hold a gay pride parade Saturday in Tokyo after a three-year hiatus, according to organizers. The parade had been held a few times since 1994, but a "heavy logistical burden" forced the organizers to suspend the event after 2002, they said. The organizers planned the parade once again after setting up a permanent steering committee for the event earlier this year. Participants are invited to wear casual and free-style costumes, the organizers said. There will also be a "queen" wearing flamboyant makeup and costume as well as a woman wearing a T-shirt that says, "My son whom I'm proud of is a gay." The 2002 parade attracted about 3,700 participants, including cheerleading groups along the parade route.
Only the one queen? You get the slight sense that the Kyodo journalist wasn't entirely comfortable writing this story.
