Yes, and no. :D I have a few songs about things like looking for an old friend to no avail, and trying to convince someone not to kill themselves, but not all of my songs are cheery pop ditties! ;)

Edmonton Sun: Tiernan turning Japanese
What do you call a six-foot-seven white man rocking out on cable TV in Japan? Tiernan is likely the only name that would apply. Singer/guitarist Laurier Tiernan is returning to Edmonton to play his first show here in over a decade, a solo acoustic set at the Victory Lounge tomorrow night. Born in Edmonton, Tiernan moved to Tokyo six years ago after he graduated from music school and a buddy with an indie label in the Land of the Rising Sun offered to record his album. Tiernan hooked up with DJ Noble to record a solo disc and amassed moderate indie rock success across Japan, including a video for the song Hesitate that recently scored airplay on national cable TV. Also appearing in the December issue of Geek Monthly magazine, he says things have been skyrocketing over the past year. Tiernan pulled together a power trio about four months ago, recruiting American-born bassist Devin Wine and Japanese drummer Toru Hirasawa to record a four-song demo that the socially conscious rockers have packaged in cut-up Japanese juice cartons. The band, also called Tiernan, is in the process of touching up a full-length album for release early next year, but couldn't be coaxed to make the pricey trip up north with Tiernan.

Being such an oddball in Tokyo has its ups and downs for the lanky Canadian. "You'll get some people who treat you very nicely because they think you're special or they think you must be retarded, because you're white and you must not know anything," he explains. "But then there's some people who will treat you in a really racist fashion because they don't like foreigners." He says he's had cabbies drive off on him because of his skin colour, and he occasionally hears people tell him they won't buy his music because the lyrics are sung in English. Tiernan has made an effort to learn the complex native tongue and has translated one single from his band's forthcoming album into Japanese. His proficiency in his first language has also been serving him well, however, as he's been teaching English classes on the side to pay the bills. Aside from the discrimination, Tiernan praises the Tokyo music scene for its abundance of venues and their willingness to book new artists, one of the major benefits of the city being so congested.

The hectic pace and lack of personal space is also a constant irritation that serves as inspiration for his writing. "Every day, when you're forcing your way through thousands of people in these huge train stations and everything, it gets to be so frustrating that you feel daunted," he says. Tiernan has always been interested in political literature and social issues and living in Tokyo has given his reading materials a new found immediacy. "I can usually read a lot of that and just keep it pent up," he explains. "But when you've got an outside personal trigger that will create the tension between your personal frustration and the stuff that you've been reading about, it's just gonna come out as an explosion." Tiernan hopes for things to explode in a big way. He will be meeting with a representative from American punk label Fat Wreck Chords in San Francisco next month and says he is willing to move wherever he can find success.

"This sounds not so cool for an indie rocker or a punk rocker or whatever, but I want us to be stadium tour people," he proclaims. "I want to make a living at it the way that Nirvana did or the way the Police did." Stadium tours or not, perhaps the next time he visits he at least won't have to save up all his teaching money to get here.
