The two patients, both biologically male, underwent the operations on June 28 and July 11, respectively.

I was driving myself insane trying to find an earlier post about Carousel Maki who is regarded as having had Japan's first sex change operation (outside Japan). The damn thing is over at the TokyoDV Forums since it cropped up during some FG down time.

Which is why I was interested to read this part of the Mainichi story:

The university's ethic committee approved the sex change operations on May 30. The go-ahead was given because officials believed other types of treatment would not cure the gender identity disorder and because the patients' families were ready to support them after the operations.
