Japanese Navy Base visit

Postby Tommybar » Thu Aug 24, 2006 3:35 pm

As reported by Kanaloco.jp August 22.

The Japanese Navy will be holding an 'Open Base' in celebration of the 'Yokosuka Summer Fest'. The celebration will take place August 26 at the base located at Nishi-Hemi, Yokosuka, Kanagawa. The base is a 5 minute walk from Yokosuka JR train station or a 15 minute walk from Keihin Kyukou's Shioiri train station.
The base will be passing 2,000 tickets out (must be 20 or over to participate) at the event for a short trip into the bay that day on the Aegis Class 'Shirayuki' and 'Hatakaze'.
They also have certain areas of main deck of the escort ship 'Ikazuchi', re-fueling ship 'Tokiwa', and ice breaker 'Shirase' open for viewing and short rides around the harbor.
There will be emergency services demonstration including helocopters and tugboats.
There will be bands from the local Yokosuka area playing as well as horseback riding for children.
The event will start at 9 a.m and is planned to finish at 4 p.m. There is no bicycle, motorcycle, or car parking. No pets allowed. Do to the dangers involved, high heals will not be allowing.

For further information, contact the base at: 046-822-3500 ext. 2208.
Man who stand on toilet, high on pot.
Been up here for hours and still don't feel anything.

Actually, the story of the Japanese explorer the Shirase is named after makes for an interesting read:

Nobu Shirase
1861-1946

I understand she's due to be decommissioned this year but the new icebreaker will also be named Shirase. The current Shirase is resting in Sydney harbour right now but due to leave tomorrow night for home. After a 6 month Antarctic tour, no doubt the crew are keen to see family & friends again.
