Fuku-mukae Festival
Date: January 3 (Thurs)
Location: Izumo-taisha Sagami-bunshi Shrine, Hirasawa, Hadano-City
Access: Free buses run from the North Exit of Hadano Station on the Odakyu Line to the shrine from January 1 (Holiday) to January 3 (Thurs)
A ceremony will be held from 13:30. From 14:00, mikoshi (portable shrines) will be paraded throughout the shrine area. People costumed as the gods Daikoku and Ebisu will wave lucky mallets in front of the mikoshi to grant spectators good luck, and “mochi-tsuki” (rice cake pounding) will take place from 12:30. From 15:00, young sumo wrestlers including Ajigawa-oyakata (ex-yokozuna Asahifuji), Aminishiki, Ama, and Asofuji will take part in “fuku-mochi maki” (lucky rice cake tossing). *Participating sumo wrestlers are subject to change.

Chakkirako
Date: January 15 (Wed)
Location: Kainan-jinja Shrine precincts and other locations, Misaki, Miura-City
Access: Take the bus from Misakiguchi Station on the Keihin Kyuko Line and get off at Misakiko (approximately 20 minutes)
Dozens of young girls wearing kimonos and holding “chakkirako” (weaving implements decorated with colorful paper strips and bells) and fans will perform a dance along to songs. This performance, a traditional event in Miura to pray for successful fishing catches, marine safety, and household prosperity, starts at 10:00 in the Kainan-jinja Shrine precincts. In the afternoon, they will change into “suikan” tops, “eboshi” hats, and “hi no hakama” trousers and perform a dance dedicated to the Dragon God at Nakazaki, Hanagure, and near the shops.

Midwinter Mikoshi Training

Location: Katase Coast Eastern shore, Fujisawa-City
Access: 5-minute walk from Katase-Enoshima Station on the Odakyu Line or 10-minute walk from Enoshima Station on the Enoden Line or Shonan-Enoshima Station on the Shonan Monorail
Four mikoshi will be carried into the ocean at Shonan to celebrate those who have just come of age and to pray for safety during the year. The ceremony begins at 11:00, and the mikoshi will be brought into the water at 11:40. The event ends at 12:30.

Yugawara Plum Orchard “Ume no Utage”
Date: January 26 (Sat) to March 16 (Sun)
Location: Makuyama Park, Yoshihama, Yugawara-Town
Access: From Yugawara Station on the JR Tokaido Line, take the temporary Makuyama Park-bound bus and get off at the last stop (15 minutes)
Approximately 4,000 red and white plum trees grow in the plum orchard at the foot and adorn the side of beautiful Makuyama Mountain. An opening ceremony will take place on Saturday the 26th, followed by Yugawara Onsen geisha dance, modern taiko drumming, and other events. The plum orchard will be lit up from Saturday, February 23 to Sunday, March 9 (18:00 – 21:00).

Manpuku-ji Temple “Hibuse” Fire Festival
Date: January 28 (Mon)
Location: Manpuku-ji Temple, Nakazato, Odawara-City
Access: 15-minute walk from Kamo no Miya Station on the JR Tokaido Line or get off at Nakazato on the Kouzu Station-bound bus (7 minutes)
A “goma-taki” burning ritual will take place in the main hall from 12:00, and after a Buddhist monk question and answer session and “yudate” purification ritual, “ofude” and “shimekazari” decorations gathered in the precincts will be set aflame while sutras are chanted. When the fire burns down, priests and visitors will walk across it barefoot. The event lasts until 15:00.

At various shrines, temples, and other locations, “mame-maki” (bean tossing) will be held to celebrate the coming of Spring. Those who catch the specially marked lucky beans will receive fabulous prizes.

Access: 5-minute walk from Kawasaki-Daishi Station on the Keikyu Daishi Line
Mame-maki will be held at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:30.

Mame-maki will be held at 11:00 and 13:30.
