Back In Tokyo: Good Reason to Drink

Looking for laid-back pubs/bars to checkout. Any recommended districts to browse? (Shinjuku Ni-chome suggestions not required, but humorous.)

If you like hanging out with old ladies playing bridge your local Bikkury Donkey is the way to go. Plus their rare cheezecake sweets are awesome...

You are asking a stupid question of poor English teachers. No one has two yen to rub together on this board. Just go in any residential neighbourhood and dropn into one of the two million small local bars.

In other words, Jack doesn't know shit about Tokyo.

zero_oki, it really depends on what you're looking for and where you're staying.

Salaryman towns:
Ueno/Okachimachi
Shimbashi (but only on weekdays)
Monzennaka-cho (also only on weekdays)

Upscale and Westernized:
Ebisu
Nakameguro
Azabujuban

College kids and slackers:
Shimokitazawa
Kichijoji

WTF?:
Golden Gai (Shinjuku)

Yen Bar in Shibuya (maruyama-cho) is good. Japanese-run, gaijin-friendly. Not the easiest to find, but it's a nice place to hide from your problems.

That's a pretty good list.

Jack, where exactly are these residential neighbourhoods with two million bars?

OK it has been a while since I spammed the board about my company's bar in Golden Gai. But we have a new tencho who is sweet and cute and is very gaijin friendly.

All the usual beers, whiskeys, shouchu as well of course. We usually have some Australian beer but it varies depending on what is on special from the supplier.

We have a special at the moment on a kangaroo burger served with a glass or Australian red for \1,000. Or you can get mini meat pies, vegemite on toast and other (non-australian) snacks.

Araku Bar G2 dori, Golden Gai.

Say that you are a friend of mine (if you know my real name of course) and get a reduction in the sit fee. :p

Back when I was slumming around the area looking for decent darts bars I stopped by a few times and enjoyed myself, although I was creeped out by skelletor(I think Im supposed to make a Greji joke here) in the back corner.

It pains me to say that I agree with Jack.
One hundred meters of ANY LOCATION in Tokyo has 6-stool bar who is [generally] pleased to have a token gaijin/alien customer, if for no other reason than the amusement factor.

That's true and those are certainly my favorite places but not every neighborhood has a lot of variety with easy to find places that go late into the night. Stumbling through the backstreets of a residential area may lead you to a gem or may lead you to an overpriced shithole with few customers, bad food and a disinterested tencho.

"Late into the night" that's good for Tokyo... Here past 8 everything is closed and the only thing you'll find are the bands of cats taking over the streets for the night...

(and there's some scary mofo)

I know most of their owners... Just, it's the sticks, and there's cats doors on most houses so they don't need their own set of keys...
