I kid you not...I've been there. I was wandering around looking for interesting places in Shinjuku about three years ago and I popped my head around the bars in that building.
I got a warm welcome when I opened the door which I usually take as a good sign to go on in. I was intrigued that it looked more like a cafe than a bar. It was also very brightly lit, which was strange, and there was no music - I assumed they were changing CDs.
It took me a good quarter of an hour to work out what the bar was. All credit to the staff who persevered. It puts a different complexion on how good your Japanese is. One of the guys told me my pronunciation was off. I thought that was a great joke until I realized he was serious - he couldn't lip-read me. And when the message pads came out, I realized I'd forgotten how to write basic kana. We ended up using keitai although I at first mistakenly assumed that none of them would have one. Quite the opposite. Sign language systems are different around the world so its not straightforward for a foreign deaf friend to communicate but they seemed keen to meet people and work it out.
I haven't been back because it all seemed quite hard work for everyone and I only went there by mistake. There is a cafe in Shibuya, just up the road from Club Quattro, which is popular with a lot of deaf students and that is more a place where hearing and non-hearing friends get together.

Signing in Japan will be a w00t for your deaf friends. American Sign Language (ASL) is quite different than JSL. JSL, ASL, and spoken Japanese all use a topic-comment grammatical system which oddly makes JSL and spoken Japanese more compatible than ASL and spoken English.

However, the mistakes you can make are wild: the JSL sign for "let's have a drink" is the ASL for "me". A few wrong signs here in Japan and WHAMMO it's time for Deaf Queer Resource Center. :P

Hello.
I have gone that deaf cafe/bar several times.
I have a question...
The woman who has put on this pic doesn't have relation with that deaf cafe/bar, because I know her.
Why did you put her pic on this pic?

It's been a while since I casually dropped that picture in, but she was linked back to deaf cafe website.

Mainichi: 2 deaf and mute people arrested over sign-language intimidation
TAKAMATSU -- Two deaf and mute people who intimidated another disabled woman using sign language, forcing her to pay them 3 million yen, have been arrested, Kagawa Prefectural Police said. Arrested were Harumi Otani, 59, and Hirofumi Takaya, 65. Takaya's 40-year-old daughter Masami was also arrested in connection with the crime, police said. Both Otani and Takaya were deaf and mute. The three suspects reportedly learned about the 77-yer-old victim at a gateball contest for deaf and mute people in Kochi Prefecture in January last year. Investigators said the three conspired to intimidate the elderly woman, who was also deaf and mute, and on Aug. 29 last year they demanded money from her at her home in Sanuki, Kagawa Prefecture. They reportedly knocked her to the ground and trampled on her legs, then took her to an agricultural cooperative in the city and made her withdraw a total of 3 million yen from two accounts and hand them the money. Police said the three suspects had learned about other deaf and mute people at the gateball contest. Law enforces are continuing to question them on suspicion of further crimes.

That's exactly why I don't play gateball.

Robots.net Posted 16 Jan 2006 at 22:55 CST by The Swirling Brain
Japanese scientists have created a robot hand that can do sign language. You just type in and send the data to the hand's computer and it does the sign language. Right now its dictionary is limited to about 10 simple Japanese phrases and about 50 words.....They then envisioned a robotic hand that could translate their language into sign language that the students could understand.....

Here is a classic example of idiotic and moronic loser FG I constantly refer to in japan. No wonder thos Japanese fuckers want to kick every single one of them out soon as they can. Doesn't Japan attract any foreigner that has even half the IQ if a south American red ant?

No music in a deaf bar... Is this guy for real???

Rinko Kikuchi Garners Overseas Plaudits

Postby Mulboyne » Thu Dec 07, 2006 4:29 pm

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Hollywood Reporter: NBR names 'Iwo Jima' top film
Fact-based fiction ruled this year's National Board of Review selections as Clint Eastwood's Japan-centric World War II drama "Letters From Iwo Jima" took home best film of the year honors...Jennifer Hudson of "Dreamgirls" and Rinko Kikuchi of "Babel" tied for breakthrough performance by an actress...more...

Although the NBR awards are a poor indicator of possible Oscar success, Kikuchi is being talked about as a candidate for the big one. Short interview with her here.

Looks good, although I think I'm having an epilectic seisure from that disco scene. (I wish the Miami Vice movie would have been that cool.)

I hope that movie comes out on Bluray or HD DVD, so I can appreciate the cinematography more.

I caught Babel here in New Jersey last week.

FANTASTIC film. The whole "deaf girl in Tokyo" sub-plot was EXTREMELY powerful, and my favorite of the three intertwined stories. She portrayed the absolute epitome of loneliness though surrounded by millions of people perfectly and definitely deserves at least a nomination. The final shot of the film was quite probably the best single shot I've ever seen, and it ended the film perfectly.

As my friend and I were leaving, I held the door open for a middle aged couple on their way out. They both had their eyes down at their feet, and when they looked up to thank me, both still had tears in their eyes. It definitely stays with you for a while after you get out of the seat and leave the theater. CHECK THIS ONE OUT!

Was the club scene shot in Vanilla in Roppongi? Anyone been there? It looks rather similar from what I remember...

I am pretty sure the club-scene is from Womb.
