setting up a japanese keyboard?

ok you know what, i fixed the problem i was having (not seeing the right keys), it was simply because i hadn't manually installed the japanese keyboard.

this is a standard japanese keyboard, but now i am having the hardest time to figure out how to get to some characters-- some keys have FOUR characters, to which i can only use two (normal and shift+key... how do i get to the other two? i've tried alt, ctrl, everything...)

ps: oh and crap, i found that my caps lock no longer works!! what is the deal with that?

All depends on which IME (input method) you are using.. keystrokes are different for different IME's. You should be able to get a map for the IME you are using.

I can find the answers for you if you answer the following:

Do you know which IME you have selected/installed?
What OS?

BTW I use a standard keyboard and type in Hepburn romaji/kana in a floating pallet and just use the standard ATOK kana/kanji henkan. I didn't think I needed to learn a new typing system especially as it was in a foreign language anyway..

try shift-capslock, the old japanese keyboards used to have some kind of character conversion key on the capslock key so you'd have to shift it in order to get its real function, modern keyboards sometimes emulate those ancient ones (like the annoying way most japanese run little programs to swap the ctrl-key with the caps lock key, just like on their old keyboards).
