help! anyway to reduce my pc's air hassle thingy?

Postby kotatsuneko » Wed Jun 04, 2003 6:08 pm

yeh, well, i built this deck last year, p4 2.4 gig, and it has a dvdr/rw in it, and along with the psu fan, has another standard sized fan

the case was really cheap which may be a factor..

hassle is, when its on, it makes the room very dry and i dunno if thats radiaton from it, or the monitor..

the monitor is last years model, mitsubushi diamondtron crt

both have ample space around them, so no air supply problems there..

the motherboard is also last years model, and is aopen , they havent had many bad reviews so i`m hoping the problem isnt lead related there..

ideally i want it next to the window, but there isnt much room, and the rubbish boxes are there..

does anyone have any idea what i can do to sort this out? would putting another fan in help? the wife falls asleep when its on , so she can't study, and i also feel kinda sick after a few hours..

well, um ta anyhow ^^

Yes, anything that heats and exchanges air will dry out the air. But the only hassel is getting shocked. Why is this a problem for you? You can just use a mist bottle (a bottle with water you spray in the air)

Adding a fan isn't going to solve the problem.. Think about it, how do fans work?

Air is cooler than the hot components in the computer. Heat travels from hot to cold. So, heat travels from your computer stuff into the air. Now, that air is heating up and in a small closed box, "trapped" if you will. The fans exchange the hot air in the machine with the cool air outside the computer.

So, fans don't really cool anything, they just move heat. You take the heat the computer is making and dump it into the air. You can move the air faster, but the heat is still generating at the same rate so you're not going to make anything cooler (except perhaps the PC, higher difference in air temp and computer temp in the box, so cooler components, but that heat didn't dissapear you're just pulling it out of the box quicker.. End result same temp room.)

thanks for the advice here guys, it makes a lot of sense..

just went outside for a sec, and came back into the room, and really felt the difference, i dunno maybe this cheap made in china case is made of lead or something? can feel the dryness hit my face..

well i guess i`ll just have to try moving the desk nearer the window or something..

really, thanks again!

Well, there is one thing you could do that might help a bit. Toss that CRT and buy yourself an LCD. They run cooler. I don't know if that would make a whole lot of difference, but it is an excuse to get an LCD!
