A blogger from Gojome, Akita, going by the name of NOBON, has found some minor internet fame by growing apples with the Apple and ipod logos. His post describing the process has become a top story on the Cult of Mac website.

This looks like a variation of an interesting new art medium, "photosynthetic photographs." The largest scale application I've seen is "grass paintings," the artist plants a large area of sod, then a negative is held in place until the grass grows. The results are exhibited in a gallery until the grass dies.
