Gov't Thinking Of Buying Your TV For 20,000 Yen

[floatl]Image[/floatl]Yomiuri: Big spending push eyed for digital TV / Cash for tech shift meant to help economy
The government and the ruling coalition have begun studying a plan to include in their extra economic stimulus package comprehensive measures to facilitate a full transition to terrestrial digital TV broadcasting. Chief Cabinet Secretary Takeo Kawamura said Monday the government plans to consider installing terrestrial digital TVs at all public facilities, including schools. New Komeito, the Liberal Democratic Party's junior coalition partner, also announced a 1 trillion yen plan that will center on a measure to buy old analog TV sets from their owners for 20,000 yen each...Under New Komeito's plan, the government would designate retail shops to pay 20,000 yen to customers who trade in their old analog TV sets and purchase new TVs capable of receiving terrestrial digital broadcasting. It also will cover recycling fees. The government and the ruling parties plan to include about 480 billion yen in a supplementary budget for fiscal 2009 and take up to 20 million analog TV sets by March 2010...Intended for general households, the measure to buy analog TVs is expected to encourage people to switch to digital TVs. However, the government is likely to face issues, such as inequality between those who already have purchased digital TVs and those who will take advantage of the measure, and how to secure funds for the measure. Some government officials have been cautious about the plan, according to sources. The government therefore may have difficulties in implementing the plan. ...more...

Bummer. Quite a few FGs here on the forum like myself have prepared ahead and bought a digital TV. Hell, I have already screwed around trying to replace my antenna (until I found out that Tokyu Cable will install free basic cable, digital Ch1-12, to any multi-family building in their service areas). Arggg.

I'm putting off buying another TV for as long as possible... The price drops have already happened but I'm hoping for a couple more technology improvements before buying.

I also hope to have a custom entertainment wall unit built at the same time and replace the audio system too. Here's hoping the economy improves. ;)

They can have my TV for nothing! I'd pay 20,000 yen for something worth watching.

OK, I want another TV for the bedroom, so I need to find a beat up old analogue set, keep it in the cupboard until they put the cashback scheme in place and then get 20,000 off the new set. Sounds like a plan..
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

I did a Souka gakai girl last month, Take...should I be worried? Only found about about her belonging to the cult last night.

And back on topic: Still have to debate 20,000 yen vs. throwing my TV off the veranda during the next earthquake. Would be kinda cool to watch the thing explode on the ground, but bucks is bucks.

Get cable or satellite. Discovery, Nat Geo, History, Animal Planet, BBC News, movie channels, music channels... The only downside is that I have gone from watching zero hours of TV per week to watching 3~4.

It sounded daft to me. Digital TV sales would have collapsed if they'd kept discussing it because most buyers would have held off in the hope of getting the rebate. Consequently, it would have been counterproductive unless they could have introduced it instantly. And, as the article says, if the plan did go ahead, it effectively penalizes anyone who has already followed government advice to change over.

Which ultimately means that I'll be conducting an aerodynamics lesson during the next earthquake. I'm hoping for an effective blast radius of at least 3 meters.

QUICK! Everyone run to hard off and cop a 3,000en tv to trade in.
This is such a insider scam. There has been commercials airing lately for boxes to convert digi-signal to analog for your old TV, and if I remember correctly, they are free.
