Excellent!
So what are the chances of SoftWank following suit?

Yeah, that.
I'm wondering if KDDI au unlocks as well, would SoftWank be forced to follow suit.
I'm hoping so, and guessing it might actually be a strategy thing.

Think of a number close to zero, then move the decimal point closer to zero. Then, move it a bit closer.

That's the percent chance of that happening unless they're forced to by government regulation.

Indeed, Son already admitted that if they opened up, they'd be killed by an exodus of iP* users to Docomo.

They are also against it, but for different reasons. AU is the only carrier to use CDMA/CDMA-2000, while everyone else uses GSM/W-CDMA. Technology is incompatible. KDDI's powerpoint also mentioned that AU SIMS are not simply locked to the carrier, but to individual phones - this means you can't even swap a SIM from one AU phone to another AU phone.

There's a party go'in on and AU ain't invited.

To make matters worse for AU, even after LTE is fully implemented, which will make everyone compatible wrt to data, they are tentatively planning on using the existing CDMA-2000 network for voice, meaning that they'll still not be fully compatible.

They can sell data SIMs to LTE tablets once they arrive and AU starts LTE service (planned for December 2012 - ouch).
