DPJ vows to abolish highway tolls in desperate election bid
In a drastic campaign to unseat the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in the next general election, the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) has pledged in its "policy manifesto" to make expressways toll-free.
The manifesto is full of numerical targets, such as slashing the jobless rate from 5.3 percent in July to about 4 percent, because the DPJ hopes to look more specific in its policies than Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's structural reform efforts.
Of course this is a promise made by the politicians *before* the election so the mileage WILL vary.
