No it is impossible. Why are you wanting to do this anyway?

If you have your phone on you, why don't you just forward it to a regular account? You will lose any emoji (pictographs) as these will be munged into a = sign by your mail server.

Emoji show up in my regular e-mail with no problems... I think it is because our standard PC config at work includes a Japanese font that is identical to the one on phones.

Because I am currently out of the country.

That sucks. They should do something about that...

The message will stay on the server until you collect them - ie when you are next in the country. But when there are too many they will bounce.

The only way is to have somebody check for you but they have to have your handset. I have heard of some people putting an auto forward function.. but these guys are pretty clued up with mobile stuff and use their own gateways.

The large teleco companies know how to do this - but they choose not to let you do it.

Why? The almighty yen.

Everytime you send and receive email with your phone you are charged - it might be less than 1 yen per mail but with 60+ million subscribers, this adds up.

So if they let you check your mail without downloading it to your phone, then you are not charged by the teleco.. therefore they cannot make money off you. This is why this happens.

Also content providers are not allowed to send email from their official content sites to anything other than a handset. Again this is because it is not allowing the carrier to charge for the packets.

Japanese mobile carriers make a bucket load of money from data traffic... and this is a growing market however, the voice revenues are falling.

Recently I started getting about 4 or so porn/OL spam mails a day. Is there any way to block these mails? The sending address seems to be different each time and the web link usually just tags a different girl's name onto the root web address that I'm supposed to access for some nice lovin'. I've asked around and everyone just keeps telling me to change my email address. Nobody, however, has suggested I just go ahead and go for the hot lovin'.

Are you using J-phone?

Is your Keitai email address one your set yourself or is it something that is set up automatically like the telephone number followed by the usual @ etc etc.

In my case (j-phone) I had to go onto the web interface (via my desk PC) and specifically say *refuse* all email unless it clearly has my full email address. Having done that and chosen an email address that no automatic dictionary dialer could ever come up with I have had no more random spam advertising.

Here's the j-phone web interface.

https://www.email.jp-c.ne.jp/

You can also go the whole way and set up a whitelist so that your keitai will refuse everyone *except* those on your whitelist.

As Steve said, you can set up a block for all non-phone based emails but also allow emails from selected domains get through.

The alternative is to have a long email address. Mine is about 16 characters long before the @ and I haven't had any SPAM in 3 years.

It doesn't matter what you have as your address.. it is the length of the address that is important. SPAMers use programs to try every permutation and combination of letters, numbers and punctuation and so the longer the address, the more difficult to "find" your address.

Make sure you don't use any two-byte characters in your address..

I'm using DoCoMo. It was after I switched to an address I picked myself that all the spam started.

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to check DoCoMo's page now for a similar service.

Let me guess - it was under 10 characters long? Mine is 16 characters and easy to remember for my friends as it is just my name with a few full stops before the @ mark. I don't have any filters but I still haven't had spam for 3 years..

if you want to have a short address I suggest you do the following.

With DoCoMo i-mode English menu, there is a section called "Options" then the first link is "Mail Settings" then go down to the "Mail Rejection" options. Follow the links.

Also, if you do get regular mail from a non-phone based address (eg mailling list, daily Japanese lessons etc) make sure you have the domain on your "white list".

ah you see the robots are not using standard syntax as the basis for their address harvesting.. they are just using programs to generate all combinations of letters, numbers etc. so even if your address doesn't make any logical sense, if it is under 10 characters they will find you.

I'm going to follow your advice when I get out of the office. Thank you both very much.

Actually, my address is 13 characters. But I suppose it is indeed sort of easy to guess. I have a feeling it is the same spammer (the mails are are all nearly identical) and he is somehow rotating the sender address each time - along with the lady's name.
