Here’s a fun/strange Japanese use for 3D printers I found on excite.co.jp (in Japanese).

3-D printer service creates figurines from kid’s drawings
Excite Bit (March 11, 2014—goofy Google Translate)

this service creates 3D figurines of kids’ drawings that they call "Rakukuri (3D Graffiti Creatures)" …3D Remind, Ltd. of Osaka’s 3D printer business takes regular 2D drawings, doodles, scribbles, etc. sent to the company and generates 3D data using their proprietary "Rakukuri" software as shown below...
