This is not a fast track project, due to time issues, but I do it little by little. First I need this router table.

OK, here is a pic of the bottom of a window, with a handle prominently visible.

Right bang-smack in the middle, and designed so that it sticks over the sill at the bottom of its rotation ...

Clearly that thing was designed to thwart any and all efforts at modification.

I know you already have a crafty plan bubbling on the back burner, but just as a thought experiment ... a lightweight inner window that slips into the sill might work as long as the window is closed and the handle is up, assuming that the handle is always up when the window is closed (of course you'd only want the inner window when the outer window is closed anyway). But then what to do when you want to open the outer window? The inner window could be made to swing open, or more cleverly to slide upward. The I-couldn't-be-bothered barbarian approach would be to have a unit that simply pulls out and rests on the floor when not in use.

Right, so I guess what you're planning involves attaching a second interior pane to the existing window, so that the whole assembly swings open when the handle is rotated and there are no fiddly extra operations to deal with? Makes sense, but I can see a couple of issues:

1. Your inner pane will end up being quite close to the outer pane which, unless you have a vacuum gap, will mean more thermal transmission from pane to pane than if you used an inner window that was separated a bit more. So it'll work, but it probably won't be as efficient an insulator as a separate inner window.

2. Does your plan mean that the (presumably) aluminium sash around the window pane(s) remains exposed? If so, you'll end up with a fair amount of thermal transmission straight through the sash, which would also reduce the efficiency of the system.

Just throwing out a few thoughts, at the risk of being totally wrong.

You have an interesting challenge there.

Hammer, first some answers to your questions / comments.

  1. The handle to turn the window open has quite some slack, so with the window closed, it is possible to put it in the upward as well as the downward position.
  2. The surface you see in the pic is not glass but a mosquito screen. Clever, eh? The window can be opened without removing the screen. It is about 3 cm from the outer window, so there would be sufficient space between windows when an inner window would be used.
  3. Heat bridge through the sash is my main concern, so I will not use aluminum frames, and certainly not ones that touch the aluminum frames of the window itself.
I think an inner window looks a bit awkward, and even more when it is designed to swing open. The window in the pic is in my guest room, but the ones in my living room are wider and have curtains in front of them, so an inner window that swings open would be inconvenient. It also would not meet the esthetic norms of the Missus (whatever those may be).

So, I kind of decided to settle for the barbarian approach to make a removable window. Anyway, it is only needed in the winter months, and I guess I can find a place in my house to store the windows in the intervening period.

I will make it so that the outer frame of the window (the one in the pic made of the artificial wood) is covered by my new outer frame, which I will make from the same artificial wood material in an L-shape.

OK, got it. Thanks.

The barbarian approach* is probably the one that will cause the least permanent damage change to the existing structure, so you can forge ahead without guilt or restraint, or lengthy pleading sessions discussions with the missus. A tiny, almost unnoticeable extra lip on the sill would be all you need for a secure installation. Or maybe a couple of tiny holes to accept pins on the added window. A clever clamping arrangement could even eliminate the need for that. Lots of fun!

Looking forward to pics of the final product.

Yep, I was thinking about something like that, but at the top of the window frame. At the bottom, strong magnets facing screws behind the wall paper will probably be the best solution.

Someone was asking about chisel blade covers (pretty sure it was Russell).

Found some nice leather ones today in my local Viva Home. Four sizes, only a couple hundred yen each.
They're out there ... just gotta keep your eyes open.

(The photo is from my Android phone, so not sure about resizing, etc.)

Very nice!

I will keep my eyes open.

Were they located near the chisels?

Yes, same rack as the chisels, but that might vary from store to store.
Anyway, if you can find these it'll save you the trouble of making them.

I don't know how many chisels are in the set you inherited, but if there are many a tool roll might be a good idea.

But what is a tool roll?

Sorry for my ignorance.

Edit: OK, I googled it. Still I prefer them nice caps...

Six!!

We got a small army happening here!

I've been mulling this over for a while, and have pretty much decided to set something up just for the small subset of weirdos who enjoy building stuff and tinkering. Hang on a bit (a few days to a week, depending on how busy the week is).

Must be a conspiracy.

Less than 24 hours after I resolved my table saw problem (kind of), this thread get reactivated.

Yep guys, I bought myself a Makita table saw stand to attach my Makita hand circular saw to.

Image

Cheap solution, which allows me to saw narrow stock. For ripping sheets I will probably use my hand saw as is. I might consider making a bigger table in the future for that.

Thing is pretty sturdy. Did not test it yet, though...
