Meanwhile, opponents of the national registry network were stunned to learn that a Home Affairs Ministry affiliate, which is in charge of overseeing the system, only plans to update its antivirus software every two weeks.
This system isn't hooked to the Internet
"The resident registry is a closed network and is completely different to the Internet. We feel there is no need to update antivirus software every day," Natsuo Toda, registry network manager at LASDEC said. "If we find a computer virus that may affect our system, we'll deal with it promptly."
I'm not worried about the viruses... I'm worried that this system is [1]Deployed on insecure laptops running the likes of Windows 98 or ME [2]Doesn't require a valid smartcard installed to operate [3]Doesn't have a lock-out after 5 minutes of inactivity.
