Macintoshes on a Novell network

Postby American Oyaji » Sat Jun 05, 2004 12:42 am

Do any of you guys know about Novell Zenworks and how to get Macs on this network?

I'm talking about log in accesses. Right now, users of PC machines, have to log into the network to unlock any PC machine. Anyone that wants to use a Mac, only needs to sit down at it.

Is there anyway to get system wide password access on the Macs. Meaning, accessing the central password database.

If the Macs are running OS X, setup a NetInfo server. If they're running OS 9, I have no idea.

CS, I'm not an IT support type...

...yet.

What is a NetInfo server. Would it be located on the main server where all the other campus accounts are hanlded or would it be in a separate location with a separate IP address?

They are G4s running OS X by the way.

Zenworks v2 doesn't support the Mac OS. Depending on which version of Zenworks you're running and which version of Netware you're running on the server, your best bet is to use Novell's knowledgebase or support forums.

There's also a pretty good listserv which Joe Doupnik contributed to when I was subscribed to it.

I'm not sure if it's of any help, as I'm pretty sure the network I accessed wasn't running Zenworks, it was however a Novell network and I was using OS X (10.2 at the time). I had to install the Novell client on the Mac until anything started to boogie.

In my prior career, the last version of Netware I ever supported (I can't remember if it was v5 or 6.something or other), Novell was phasing out support for the Mac clients since they were moving to an IP protocol only. For the recent versions of Netware, I think you now have to buy the Mac client. Again, it depends on what version of Netware you're running on the server.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'm probably gonna go with CS's first suggestion since I found out that we have an Xserve..

I'll just creat separate accounts for out dept.
