Apple Previews OS X Tiger - 30" Cinema Displays

Postby mr. sparkle » Tue Jun 29, 2004 5:40 am

Apple Computer has announced a new version of OS X (v. 10.4) called "Tiger" today at the WWDC Apple Developer's Conference. This will have over 200 new features. The coolest of which is video conferencing with iChat AV. You can now have up to 30 streams of audio and 4 streams of video. iChat AV is now powered by the h.264 codec. Now you too can give NTT the middle finger when you "phone home".

Other features include:
Spotlight - an enhanced Find feature
Safari RSS - a new way to customize news feeders and to personalize the web experience in general
Dashboard - a way to access Widget mini-apps
Automator - a batch task aid
VoiceOver - control more features by voice control
.Mac sync - keeps all your stuff up to date and in sync
Enhanced UNIX Support - optimized 64 bit environment
Xcode 2.0 - for app development
Core Image - harnessing the GPU of a video card to jack up performance
h.264 codec - AKA MPEG 4 v.10 is a scalable video technology that produces higher quality and lower data rates for use in anything from 3GPP to HD.

Also released were the oft rumored aluminum displays - the largest of which is 30" across! A totally new video card was developed for this technology - the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 DDL.

Unlike previous Apple monitors, this DVI connection lets you directly the monitor with a PC without having to go out and buying one those damn adaptors (I hope). This is useful if somebody like me is visiting a Apple-based office with my cheezy, PoS, Vaio notebook. :?

Ooooooo! Swivelly!

That looks like good design since it appears the keyboard can slide under monitor. Now there's something "swivelly" to match my never-used iSight.

Taro,
Can't you reconfig the iSight to be yer Pongi Helmet Cam? Just run the firewire down to a GVD-900 miniDV deck in your pack.

BTW, the new monitors have a magnetic mount for the iSight.

Why don't you use it? iChat AV is just plain awesome. Now, if only Pongi had Panther. We could chat w/o having to pay maBell. Gots ta love 'dat! :)

BTW, stay cool. I heard that it's blast furnace hot there right now (so much for spring). You gots the heat stroke? I just stroke! Da backstroke....
