Microsoft's Tokyo offices raided

Officials from Japan's fair trade watchdog have raided Microsoft's Tokyo offices on suspicion that the US giant violated Japanese anti-monopoly laws.
A Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed that the Fair Trade Commission had inspected the company's Japan headquarters, but denied any wrongdoing.

The commission said it believed the US giant had attached unfair conditions when signing software deals.

S. Korean Microsoft Offices Searched12:37:00 PM /SEOUL, South Korea, Jun 10, 2004 (AP Online via COMTEX) --South Korean regulators searched the offices of Microsoft Corp.'s local subsidiary on Thursday to investigate allegations that the U.S. software giant violated trade regulations by tying its instant messenger software to its Windows operating system.
The investigation, conducted by South Korea's Fair Trade Commission, comes after the European Union fined Microsoft about $606 million in March and demanded changes in the software company's business practices. Microsoft has filed an appeal of the EU's antitrust decision.
In February, officials from Japan's fair trade watchdog raided Microsoft offices there on suspicion of monopoly law violations - in particular, whether Microsoft attached overly restrictive conditions to deals with computer makers. Microsoft said it had already dropped a controversial provision of those contracts but was cooperating with authorities.
South Korea's FTC said it will conduct onsite investigations of Microsoft Korea through next Wednesday.

A fair number of people here use MSN, but by and large it's Buddy Buddy that rules the messenging apps in Korea.

Japan raps Microsoft for 'restrictive' clause
The Age, Australia -JUly 13
Japan's anti-monopoly watchdog has slapped a warning against Microsoft Corp, demanding that the US software giant remove what it said was a restrictive clause from contracts with electronics makers.
Fair Trade Commission official Toshihiro Hara said the warning was issued this morning.
The commission, which said the restrictions violated Japan's fair trade law, did not set a fine or other penalties,
