160gb 7200rpm external harddrive

Postby sy-co » Tue Aug 31, 2004 8:48 pm

Hi all, just stumbled onto this site and have been here for the last few hours catching up. Do you think I could have that time back please? I could use it in so many other ways, but would they make me laugh as much?!?

I figured this is as good as any place to ask a techie question, nothing too geeky though. Got to say I'm a bit worried about spelling and grammer with all those english teachers watching. Shite should have capitalised the E in english, shite did it again.

soooooo to rapidly move onto the point of my post.

I need an external harddrive, I want a 160 GB 7200 rpm firewire connection for less than 20.000 yen.

In my neck of the woods (Nagano) We only have a couple of stores to choose from and none provide what I'm looking for. I can get a 5400/160/firewire HD easy enough but Japan, so far, doesnt seem to see the need for a decent speed hard drive.

Mail order from the states/uk is working out to be around 250 bucks (US) when shipping costs are factored in which is more than I want to pay.

Is there a Japan based mail order company that can provide what I'm looking for or even a Japan domestic model number with which I can track down the suppliers. Failing that a cheap import would also suffice/do/hit the spot.

(How am I doing with the grammer/spelling?? Did you spot the splitt infinitive? I had to look up what a splitt infinitive is, do you?. Hang on, isn't Splitt a town in eastern Europe?)

Looking forward to spending many happy hours venting my everyday frustrations on you all, of which, I have many.

And again to return to the point of my post, any suggestions?
Oh look a hornets nest, now all I need is a stick.

Fill in the 'GB' and 'rpm' fields, then search (bottom, center button).. Around 16,000..

Kakaku!!! for you.

I've not seen enclosures before but they sound the daddy. Any model numbers for me to begin an education?

Actually no, I was searching for the firewire HD on google. How did you find the blog? I dont track referrers or look at the logs very often on that site. Incidentally I took the pic of the monkey at a place a little ways away in Nagano Prefecture, called jikokudani (spelling?) with a point and shoot digital. Photogenic little bastards aint they. Oh no sorry getting my pics mixed up, that one you've got is my old Grandmother , God rest her soul.

bikkle, thanks for the links and gen. Prices look a little steep, after you factor in the price of the drive I'm busted on my 20,000 yen target.

I guess I'll have to continue looking for the firewire 7200rpm/160gb drive.

Guyjean the kakaku link looks to have some cool stuff. I'll have to get a japanese buddy to help me with the next step.

Nice work fellas! If you're going to Nagano anytime soon the first one's on me

Get an enclosure

Postby mr. sparkle » Wed Sep 01, 2004 4:22 am

Sy-co,

Ultra is right, buying a raw HD and putting it into an enclosure is the cheapest way to get the most bang for da Yen. I suggest a Hitachi HD, they are the most reliable drive for the money, although I prefer Seagates if I have the dough.

It's so easy to slam in a 7200 RPM ATA drive into a FireWire enclosure, even that Monkey could do it. Well, I could do it anyway. All you need is a Phillips screwdriver.

I took an old 80 GB 5400 RPM Maxtor outta my old G3 and slammed it into a case I found with Froogle. It cost me a total of $35 bones (around Y3,200). Even the 5400 drive in that enclosure captures and plays back video w/o a hitch. Amazing!

Just make sure the enclosure has the Oxford 911 chip in it. It's a feature which should be advertised.

Like Ultra said get a cheap Firewire case and buy a hard drive. I have a cheap one for work made in Korea and cost less than 10,000 yen (don't remember the price exactly). It also has a USB interface but the USB is slow as hell.
Connections are easy like someone mentioned; 1 power connector and one wide IDE connector to the drive. The Firewire case a DC power supply 'mini brick' and came with a USB and Firewire cable.
There is a Japanese company Ratoc that makes various drive interfaces but they are a little more expensive than made in China or Korea.
