All this stuff is announced because of the big NAB convention that takes place every year in Vegas around this time.

Dude. It's awesome. Especially the multi-cam feauture. You can cut on the fly, much as a technical director calls live shows. There's a ton of more goodies too...native HDV support, P2 support (no more capturing!), ProTools killa'--Soundtrack 2, vectorized LiveFonts in LiveType, film data available throughout the interface, improved scaling algorithms, distributed encoding with Compressor, Motion-After Effects interoperability, audio mixer automated control surfaces, dynamic RT timeline processing.

Plus, Panasonic has released info on the HVX-200--a $5995 camcorder tha does every flavor of HD under the sun, including 24P!

I'll be in Vegas for NAB Tues., Wed., and Thursday. I'll report on other broadcast goodies if there is any interest....

I have a big bad G5, but I'm still using final cut pro 4. although the new package looks sweet, and seems to pack more bang for relative buck, I don't plan on upgrading soon since I'm pretty well off as is.

about HD stuff... something like 1% of the people out there (in the US) have an HD Television set, so I'm holding off on getting an HD cam or HD editor until there's more of a need for it. granted, if you do contract editing gigs, some people may ask for it, but it seems like most TV stations/film studios doing any HD work have invested in their own HD set-ups. comments? disagree?

...more HD rant...
it's funny to watch the NBA and hear the commentators constantly trumpet how 'this is broadcast in HD!!' meanwhile, most dudes with disposable cash have already bought a non-HD big screen of some sort and are fine not being able to see the pores of Shaq's bald head. this isn't like the switch to color TV. either the price for HD televisions are going to have to come waaaaay down, or they are going to have to offer more value than simply a better picture. just like with audio, most people are fine with a reasonably stereo system, it's only a select few who will put out the hard cash for a top line Blaupunkt sound system worth thousands. right now, the only HD tv set most people can afford is about 15-inches. and what's the point of HD when it's on a 15-inch screen?

Preach it Brother Jim! HD is nice, but its got nothing really going for it for the average home user. Noow, when they those really NCIE multi-layer LCD's onto the market and they wind up being capable of HD play with depth, THEN you might see a "consumer need" for the technology.

But I do like that "no more capturing" Sparkle-sama mentions! Gimme back my diskspace for more clips and edits!

Rite on DV brothers. DV R U L E Z! Shoot the hell out of it. I love the Beta SP quality and VHS prices. We got it pretty good, ya'll. Even a G3 with FCP 3 is good to go for 90% of all you would need to do anyway...

P2 is 'da BOMB! So, after 2006 there won't be no 'mo capturing video. You just load the PCMCIA stixx into the Mac via FireWire. So, you only need to "copy" the files--not capture them.

FCP 5 is more for multicam freaks. And with Bjork showing up with 120 cameras for "Dancer in the Dark", she wishes she had FCP 5 multicam.

Plius HDV is godhead for straight cuttin' web-vid.....

What you really want for Cinema DV is the HVX-200 from Panasonic. It will shoot any mo' fo' format under the sun for $5995--including DVCPro HD!!!! This is going to kick some MAJOR ass with indie filmmaking. O' course FCP 5 is good to go with 'dat shite y'all.

Anyway, Vegas is tomorrow. So I gotta get up early.

Thanks for the info Sparkle-sama!

I have to go cry now.

That is pretty big news regarding Adobe and Macromedia. But what does it mean? Total domination of web and mobile authoring?

BTW, it is Final Cut Studio, not Final Cut Pro Studio. Hey, ask the marketing guys.
