I was completely underwhelmed. With all the rumors about a video iPod, and the PSP kicking the iPod's ass (IMO), this iPod nano is a non-event. So it's a smaller iPod...so what? It's still over-priced, and under-powered in terms of features.

I see this as a mis-step for Apple, and one of the few times they incorrectly anticipated what the public was hankering for.

Just came back from the Ginza Apple Store. Looking at the long lines and how quite a few of the people in the lines were carrying more than 1 iPod nano, I must say it looks like this is exactly what the public was hankering for. If it keeps up, they may run out of stock before the weekend is through.

Going to buy one to go with my 40GB iPod. The 40 is great for so many things but there are times when I want something smaller, lighter, and/or with a longer battery life. This looks ideal.

I would also love one of these but alas the Kenwood system that came in my car isn't 2003 or newer. :(

Probably no changes in the DSP and therefore you won't expect any major sound improvements.

I am sure this thing will cost a good deal, initially, but hopefully it will bring the older models' prices down. :D

It is gone from their US online store already so I guess that's a yes. I can't see anyone wanting to buy a Mini after this has come out.

They only thing I could think of is that they have excess surplus that they want to get rid off. Then again, it's an iPod and I'm sure they don't have a lot full of them lying around.

They probably have some stock that they sell off to other retailers at a marginally reduced rate. I think Apple keeps their stock levels pretty low though.

Does anyone still carry around MiniDiscs?
I still proudly have my Sony that carry a woopin 4 hours worth of songs (MDLP mode) but the real problem is the shitty software with no English OS support. This is one of the reasons why I have to live with a J OS.

I really want this Nano by Christmas.

There is no need for J OS. You can run any Japanese Windows software on top of any language version of Win 2K or XP.

The reason is that there are no longer OS "languages" as such. The language is basically a skin that goes on top of the base system.

Just make sure you install Japanese support and set the default language for non-unicode apps to Japanese and it will work perfectly. I like to install J-office and the extra fonts it comes with too.

Just ordered a personalized 4GB one from the applestore on line (about 28,000 yen and 3-5 days delivery).

FG Lurker wrote:You didn't set the default language for non-unicode programs to Japanese. I have used Eki spa-to on Win2K English before. It works fine once you set the default for non-unicode programs properly. Also an old version of MS Hagaki Studio works fine, once you have set the default. Anything that will run on J-windows 2K or XP will work fine.

Outlook and Outlook Express work properly for email subjects once you set that up too.

It works so well in fact that if you have a multilingual program that supports English and Japanese, it will install the Japanese version after you have set the default to Japanese.

Shit, the next time you can install it for me.
I'll buy you beer

I hate to go way off subject, but do you use i-Emoji on your English OS for inputting Docomo phone mail icons?

Heheh, I don't get up to Tokyo much these days. It's not at all hard to do, it's in the regional settings control panel applet. Once you have installed Japanese support you will be able to set the default language for non-unicode applications. This is not the same as the default for measurements etc. You have to find the setting for non-unicode apps.

Never tried it... Does it work with Vodafone?

I'm sure they have programs for Vodaphone and Au as well. Most of my acquaintances use Docomo anyway. Maybe it's discussed on here already, who knows. I haven't been in here long enough to recall.

(after a week of not being able to enter the site: i'm back! :D )

I think theyll be hard pressed to make the nano thinner for at least the next couple of years and upgrades will basically mean boosting capacity in 2gb increments.

Got a free mini with my ibook a couple of months ago - other people in the family have been using it - maybe it would be prudent to ditch it quicksmart for a nano... and then keep it all to myself

What did you have 'personalized'? I just put my name and email address, but my co-worker thought that was lame.

Black or white?

If they make it any thinner, it would probably bend in half when you sit down with it in your pocket.
At this point, the limit to minaturization is the battery and the GUI. They probably could have made it half the size if they cut half the battery size (and battery life) but then it's barely large enough to hold the screen, no room for a click wheel.
This is about the ultimate development of this design, I don't see how it can get any better except by larger capacity (which won't take more room, as chips get denser).

Damn, I never thought about that! I got black. Is that politically incorrect for a redneck?

The kanji for the 7 ideals of bushido 'just' fit on the back (of the larger ipods anyway).
I was considering it... but then i forgot ... and walked into the apple store in ginza: 5mins after purchase, i thought.. "oh shit yeah  "

I think the 4gb nano is going to be harder to find (in Tokyo, at least) than the PSP was at launch.

I spent 3 hours today biking all over the city trying to find one.

4 Bic Cameras in Ikebukuro? only 2gb nanos
Sakuraya in Ikebukuro? only 2gb nanos
Sofmap in Akiba? only 2gb nanos
Azo Bit City in Akiba? only 2gb nanos
Sofmap Mac Collection in Akiba? only 2gb nanos
The Apple store in Ginza? only 2gb nanos

I gave up and headed home, taking a different route than I usually do. I passed by a Kojima Denki and figured I may as well stick my head in and check.

The hadn't even set up their display models yet!

When I walked in the guy was just putting up the signage for the nano. I hurriedly asked if they had any 4GB models (white, of course) and he had to go rooting around for a box of them to open.

And now it's mine. :)

The only quibble I can find is that you can't transfer data via firewire (but it will charge that way). Weird.
