Russell wrote:Hammer, this stuff could indeed be in the Tinkering thread, but somehow it made sense to me to make it a separate thread, so that I would be able to find it back easily. OK, I know there is a search function, but sometimes I like to keep things systematic.

On a related note, I wonder what I should do with bigger projects I am planning. These will typically take extended time (months to years), so each may deserve its own thread to give them some continuity. "Tinkering", OTOH, seems to imply small projects.

What will these bigger projects be? Well, I have in mind the following:

  1. Making an attic on the third floor of my house (yep, didn't start that one yet, due to discouragement from the Missus and lack of time),
  2. Making a trellis for roses in my garden,
  3. Making an arbour for grapes in my garden,
  4. Making a construction of poles, postbox and name plate, and move my current interphone to it,
  5. Making a shed (10 square meter) in my garden,
  6. Making 20 m of fence to hide an ugly wall,
  7. Developing a system to harvest rain water, and store it for later use in my garden (preferably automated),
  8. All kinds of home improvement projects.
Fortunately, I have the full (mental) support for the garden projects from the Missus, so it is relatively easy to buy tools for that purpose...

Holy crapola Russell, I'd say you have a pretty full schedule there! And if you're going to be in charge of the roses and grapes, that'll take up a good chunk of your time as well.

I like the idea of the shed. I'm sort of half-planning to build a small one next to my current workshop to house stuff that is just killing space in the workshop (winter/summer tires, garden tools, suitcases, and a few other nuisances, plus my compressor and a dust collection system that will be ducted to the main workshop). Unfortunately I also have to work for a living.

BTW, I thought we were getting a "Tinkering" or similar section for this type of stuff, where threads can be created to accommodate different projects. Wonder what happened to that plan.

All in good time eh? When our esteemed admin octopus has a moment ......

The only thing I would add, is that I think I would prefer it to be where Tinkering is now. Posting pictures of home and other stuff is much less fraught there.

The router arrived just in time for Christmas.

The shop (HomeMaking) send it quickly enough, but it took Sagawa Kyuubin two days to get it all the way from Aomori prefecture to Kansai. Must be snowing there or something.

But this router is serious equipment. I did not expect it to be this sturdy. Easy to imagine that my great-grandson will still be using it...

Gonna give us a demonstration?

It's kinda weird that you're buying from Aomori while I'm buying most of my stuff from a place in Shizuoka these days.

Anyway, it's a little late to order for Christmas, but maybe I'll get myself a new year's present. I did buy some bits of ash (タモ) today for an upcoming project. Looks like my biggest issue from now on will be sourcing interesting woods. Might need to get busy with the chainsaw.

So yeah ... waiting for pics of that first router project. :cool2:

Let me guess: OFF CORPORATION INC.

I like that company in Aomori, because their prices tend to be among the lowest, and business with them is fast and smooth. I have used them twice to satisfaction. Also, fees for sending and payment (代引き) are free above a certain limit that I tend to easily break. And it feels good to support a business in Tohoku.

That'll probably be the trellis for my roses. Is in preparation, but I need to figure out what wood to use and where to get it. Should be reasonably resistant to rot and termites, and preferably not tropical hardwood because of environmental reasons.

Yep, good one.

My small Bosch trimmer makes a lot of noise (almost painful), so this big router can only be worse.

Since then I did buy myself earplugs and a headphone-like thingy.

UNIDY sells redwood 2x4s 2x6s 4x4s, and maybe a few more dimensions in lengths up to 3.x meters or so. If you watch for when they receive delivery you can run thru the stack and pick out almost clear boards as well as those that are heartwood (deep red). I have used it for decks and arbors but I do treat it with a sealer every few years following use.

Joyful Honda also carries it, but their price is much higher than Unidy.

Thanks. Good info, but unfortunately I live in Hyogo, where they have no shops. I guess I'll have to check out the bigger home centers in my area.

Bummer on the distance… When I pick thru a new lot I generally only take less than one out of 30 boards, so wouldn`t recommend having them shipped to you sight unseen. Quite a few will be propeller material, many will have fatal knots, and most will be whitewood – with only a few good oily and straight heartwood boards.

Judging by your track record that would not even be in the top 10 of things that should never have been anywhere near your balls...

I am a bit confused by your use of the terminology "whitewood". Wood of spruce tends to be called that way, but it seems that you refer to it in terms of what part of tree it comes from. I do prefer wood that comes from the core of a tree (I guess you call that heartwood), but I also want it to be from a tree that is rot- and insect-resistant.

Here is a list of trees that are categorized in terms of insect-resistance and durability, as determined by some Japanese organizations that appear to be experts in it.

There is also this link, in which insect-resistance of several types of wood are tested. This suggest that 桧 (Hinoki) is pretty much insect resistant. Combined with the excellent durability and the availability in home centers, this may be a good candidate.

And then there is treated wood called Accoya, but it is only sparingly available in Japan against ridiculous prices: 70 x 70 x 4200 mm costs 21,220 Yen.

Nah, I think I'll go for Hinoki. I saw it in the Royal Pro home center for 1,210 Yen per 75 x 75 x 3000 mm. Even better, it was not pre-dried. I guess that would be the best for outside use.

I guess somebody got a woody from the slight digression of table saws to wood types suitable for outside construction use.

But anyway, the genital shaving is not too much of a digression. I pressume that the gentlemen would like to try a shave by table saw? 8-)

Oh, and anybody familiar with wood types available at home centers in Japan is more than welcome to drop a comment...

Wood from the Redwood is in color a deep red in the core, and is oily there - but is nearly white near the bark, and less oil there. If your application is needing rot protection, then you only want the red wood from a Redwood. (I just made up the word - whitewood. I believe sapwood is the right term.)

I googled around a bit, and found a source confirming your statements.

So, now I'll have to find myself a reliable source to buy redwood in the Kinki area...

I have bought wood from here; not exactly kinki, but the goods were OK, though rather not on the cheap side, I suspect. A good source a little closer to Nagoya or even a lumberyard that one could crawl through and choose would be very nice to have. The wood-variety at our local Kahma's is just not very inspiring.

BTW – both Coal Tar and Creosote are available at large home centers and either can be used for below the ground treatment to help delay the onset of rot. I use the coal tar to seal heartwood that is exposed on trees which have been damaged or topped out. I use the creosote for below the ground treatment of posts. Either can simply be painted on and left to dry before use of the timber.

Table saw ... I still can't decide whether that's a necessary item or not, although I guess my indecision kinda points to the likelihood that it isn't. I think if you're mainly doing cabinetry or something that involves lots of panelling all the time the answer might be "yes," but for me, nah. That doesn't mean that I wouldn't get one if I had oodles of space, but in a situation where I have to make the most of a small room there are bigger fish to fry.

Why back to this all of a sudden? Well, I spent most of today happily slicing up lumber for a little project -- longish 910mm cuts in 15mm ply with the circular saw, and a bunch of 2x4 chopping on the mitre saw, and although the ply stuff would have gone quite a bit faster with a table saw, I still managed to get the job done cleanly with the circular saw which was then put away on its shelf where it will probably stay, out of the way, for a couple of weeks or more until needed again.

So yeah ... I think I'll just forget about it a while.

On the other hand, I do have something coming up that would make a thickness planer or drum sander very handy, and that thought is starting to scare me a little.

Ah yes ... looking at that one myself.

Then there's the one made by Irii which is actually a bit cheaper but will handle up to 330mm width and 152mm height as opposed to the 254mm width and 127mm height of the Ryobi.

So unpack that thing and plane something and let us know how it went!
