I would really like an iPhone app that would let me access my AirportExpress while on the road, so that I wouldn't need to carry a laptop.
A lot of hotel rooms only have LAN cable access, which is fine because I can just plug in AE to get Wifi for my iphone, but if the hotel has set it to PPPoE and my AE is set to DHCP, the only way I can change it over is by using "AirPort Utility" from my laptop.
If there were an iPhone application, say like, "AirPort Utility Lite" or something, then I would be able to leave the laptop at home.

Maybe GG can come up with something.................please

Holy shit, I can't believe the AirportExpress isn't configured with a browser. That's bullshit.

I'm sure you could find a small wifi router with browser-based configuration instead of having to use Apple's proprietary software...

Sure, probably...

Every consumer-oriented router I have seen in the last, oh, nearly 10 years has been browser-configured though. The last one I used that required proprietary software was an early Planex wifi base station (not even a router). Good to know that Apple is keeping up with "recent" advancements.......

Apple will now offer the iPhone on more than one carrier in the UK after the exclusive contract they had with the O2 network has expired. That might be an indication of what they plan to do elsewhere.

And when will they ever put on the IR for the quick number transfering?

It is if you want to transfer your number to any "normal" phone... Pretty much every Japanese brand phone has IR ability and many people use it. It's one of the PITA things about having an iPhone in Japan.

(Wouldn't trade my 3GS for anything though...)

All in all, most foreign phones in Japan (Nokia, LG, Samsung, etc) are very Japan unfriendly. There is a good reason for that, but for now, I will stick with the local brand.

The only features of Japanese phones that I don't have and actually would use occasionally are the QR Code reading and the IR feature.

I get tremendous benefits from my (jailbroken) iPhone though. I use it as a modem when out in inaka with no net access. I have a ton of apps ranging from sky charts and tidal tables to a pedometer to RDP and VNC clients. I even have full shell access and everything that generally comes along with that. Oh, and it has 32GB of flash so I sync my car's iPod and the iPhone with the same music library making everything very easy to keep updated.

On top of that I have push mail and push calenders from Google Apps, automatic syncing of my IE bookmarks, and built in features like the stocks/currency app that I use all the time. Oh, and apart from flash pages I can view and use just about any PC-oriented page from the built in browser and use POP/IMAP email from the email client.

I could actually go on and on.... I have a free "level" app that I use when doing studio photography to ensure that the camera and subject are both level (or at least equally off kilter). I use the compass, GPS, and maps app from time to time. Google Maps is great for directions or if you need to describe a location to someone. Street View works now too which can be quite interesting.

I'd never used a phone for anything other than calls and a bit of email before but the iPhone has really changed the way I work with a mobile device. I'm no Apple fanboy so if something better came out from somewhere else I'd certainly be open to switching to that -- Android has a lot of potential and I can easily see having an Android-based phone a few years down the road. I'd never go back to a standard phone though, there is so much more that a mobile device can do. Every week or so I find something else I can do with it that I hadn't thought of before.

Why is Japan still using IR? It's clunky when compared to Bluetoothl

IR is better than Bluetooth for what people are using it for -- transferring their contact information to someone else's phone. You put the phones side-by-side, one person chooses send, the other receive, and the transfer happens. No need to search for handsets or set up a bluetooth link, no chance of sending your contact information to the wrong phone, no need to actually have any understanding about what is going on... As long as you can choose send or receive you can transfer your contact information. Anyone from a JHS to a 60yo baba can do it.

I agree that overall Bluetooth is so far ahead of IR that the two aren't even comparable but in this case IR is simple, easy, and "just works".

Good point there. If BT was such a great thing, it would have taken off many years ago. It's been around for 9+ years already..

My phone comes with it anyway, but I never bother to get a headset or do anything fancy with it. Maybe there is a way to sync it with my PC, but I never bother to read the instructions or search for the download software.

I'd almost certainly switch to DoCoMo if I the iPhone was on offer...

If Melbourne's prediction is right and that Japan will have it's second carrier, I would certainly say it's going to be DoCoMo as AU (not Australia, Charles) is practically in bed with Sony Ericsson and their Walkman phones.

I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure the iPhone is incompatible with AU's network.

This video looks fake, it's so cool. However, the demo of the "Parrot AR.Drone" (Take-copter) is the star of CES 2010. (CES 2010 Best of Show Award for the AR.DRONE iPhone-controlled Quadricopter.)

japanese ime crashing

Postby james » Tue Jan 19, 2010 11:39 am

recently i'd been experiencing spontaneous application closes (crashes?) while using my iphone. i'd done no firmware updates or the like before experiencing this problem.

reboots / power downs / cold restarts etc did not resolve the problem so last night i did a full restore.

much to my annoyance, the problem still has not been fixed but i've narrowed down the cause to the japanese ime. it doesn't matter if i've already done other input or not (english and emoji work fine ad infinitum) but entering any kind of regular japanese causes (so far) any application accepting japanese input to simply close and return me to the home screen after entering no more than about 5 characters.

not having japanese input is rather problematic. has anyone else experienced this?

And it turns out that Apple actually did call it the iPad.

It is sorta interesting, but I feel pretty underwhelmed. Maybe that will change with some cool apps, but as it stands now there isn't anything that makes me really want one of these...

Hello Friends.
I also think that Japan is a much more important market for the iPhone than you realize. Apple wants to push iTunes sales here and the best way to do that is with iPhone. Once they get a phone that is usable on 3G networks here I think we will see both Apple and Softbank push it heavily. How well it will be received here though is a different matter... Hammering out mails on the touchscreen is likely not going to be as quick as on a standard keypad.
