Because, I don't give a fuck about retina displays, while having a on board computer in my car that fake working with an iphone while having an interface out of an 1990 ATM is starting to get really old...

Absolutely all the can and OBD data from the head unit can be streamed by bluetooth. Just need car maker to acknowledge their limits and allow companies that understand human brain to help...

Curse of the iPad: Brits have less sex

The frequency with which Britons have sex has declined over the past decade, in what is suggested to be a "recession impact", a result of depression or even a consquence of people playing with their iPads in bed instead.

iPhone photo app 'Primo' makes pretty photos ugly
TomoNews US -- Dec 5, 2013
While some photography applications make people more beautiful by smoothing out the skin and adjusting the brightness levels, Japanese iPhone app 'Primo' undoes those photo editings. The app is designed to automatically analyze made up images, then remove all makeup from a subject's face.

iOS takes 68.7% of the smartphone market in Japan?

Postby BigInJapan » Tue Jan 28, 2014 11:46 pm

According to research by "Kantar Worldpanel ComTech", iOS had an average share of almost 70% of the smartphone market in Japan (final quarter of 2013). I know the iPhone and iPad have consistently been in the top 10 for quite awhile, but I find it hard to believe that 7/10 of all smartphones floating around in Japan right now have an apple logo on the back...

In Japan, consumers’ desire for all things Apple continued into the final quarter of 2013, with iOS taking 68.7% share of smartphone sales. Apple’s deal to sell iPhones through Japan’s largest carrier, NTT DoCoMO, has proved an unarguable success with Apple’s share on the carrier reaching 58.1% in the fourth quarter compared with 91.7% on Softbank and 63.7% on AU KDDI.

Full article (with info for other markets too) on Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

I am not interested enough to remember when the new models were released, but it is perhaps likely that those percentages are talking about sales within that quarter only, not cumulative shares. Possibly 7 out of 10 smartphones sold last quarter were Apple, largely people upgrading.

Bloomberg wrote:How Steve Jobs Got the iPhone Into Japan

The iPhone, it's safe to say, is big in Japan. Toward the end of last year, three out of every four smartphones sold in Japan were iPhones, according to market researcher Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. Tim Cook said during Apple's most recent earnings call that its phone sales in the country shot up 40 percent after it signed a deal with NTT Docomo.

Breaking into Japan was no cheap trick. To get there, Steve Jobs took a chance on a self-made Japanese billionaire who had a crude drawing of an iPod phone and no mobile carrier to speak of. SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son recounted how he scored the deal to become the iPhone's exclusive carrier in Japan in a television interview with Charlie Rose that aired this week.

Apple fans so eager for an iPhone 6 they’re lining up before it’s even announced
About this time last year, we brought the story of a group of fans who spent over a week camped out on the sidewalk, just so they could be first in line to snag an iPhone 5S on launch day at the Apple Store in Tokyo’s Ginza. But while we can understand the appeal of the fun and comradery that comes from braving the elements with your fellow technophiles, we were a little shocked when we recently strolled by the same store in the swanky neighborhood and saw there’s already a line forming for the iPhone 6, which Apple hasn’t even announced yet.

Japan's old flip-phones soldier on while smartphones shrink

Japanese shipments of traditional flip-phones rose in 2014 for the first time in seven years while smartphone shipments fell, highlighting Japanese consumers' tenacious attachment to the familiar and typically less expensive older models.

Dubbed "Galapagos" phones because they have evolved to meet unique Japanese standards and tastes, flip-phone shipments rose 5.7 percent to 10.58 million in 2014, data from market researcher MM Research Institute Ltd shows. Smartphone shipments fell 5.3 percent to 27.70 million, down for a second year.

Users in Japan pay some of the highest smartphone fees among developed nations, the telecommunications ministry says, while flip-phone rates are among the lowest. Many Japanese accustomed to years of deflation are content with old-style flip-phones offering voice calling, email and in most cases basic Internet services.

They gave us iPhones for work, I don't really see what is so great about them.

Kind of pisses me off, if I lose it or break it I have to pay for it apparently, and they are not cheap. They only gave it to me so I can ignore emails and telephone calls when I am outside as well.

Re: iPhone Hysteria

Postby yanpa » Thu Feb 19, 2015 11:55 pm

At my prior place of employment they handed out iPhones for work purposes, and they were quite useful as I could check my mail on the way to work etc. and be genuinely more productive. Then the cockwombles in charge decided that they were handing out too many toys to the staff and we could read the mail on our private phones just as well, so I whipped out my gPhone (g = Galapagos) and asked how that would work. Which meant I reverted to staring out of the train window or leering at fellow commuters. Not that I work there any more, or do any of this "commuting" thing. My former team "leader" promptly snaffled the one I had to return, as it was a 5S (!) and sexier than the 5 (I think because it had fingerprint recognition to unlock the phone, which was marginally less reliable than inputting a PIN).

Just the kind of quality one wants in a phone. But wait - I use my current Nexus as a) an internet terminal, b) a pocket still/video camera, c) to receive work-related alerts during a narrow range of hours. I believe it can also be used for so-called "phone calls", but I use my computer for those mostly.

Can a company actually require that of you? I'd definitely tell them to go fuck themselves if it ever came up.

It's definitely useful for me. I have to make calls and check email with attachments and reply when I'm on the go but I don't actually have to create many documents so lugging my laptop around like I used to was annoying. Now I don't even need a bag most of the time.

That's an interesting point, I value the time I am away from work, and resent the creep.

I believe I could have stuck with the old phone, which was built like a brick, could be used to beat down a frisky wooly mammoth, but I didn't give it enough thought at the time.

I did find myself looking at emails from other time zones on the morning train for a while, til I decided not to take the thing home with me. If they are in another time zone I don't think the time it takes me to get to work really matters, and if they are in this time zone and they are sending emails out of office hours they need to get a life. Maybe the mobile tech thing is more for people whose opinion matters every second of the day and can be fully communicated on a 3 inch screen.

We have walked into a very strange world.

Yep, this * 100!

But I even doubt how much of an opinion they exchange with others.

On my commute I see all these zombies playing with their smartphones, and I actually see them rarely communicate by text. Most of what they do is playing games. Especially young women appear to be addicted. Really, they should get a life.
