Wonder, what that "life" is, you guys are talking about, but never explain? Wiki just seems to hint "absence of death", which would be proven by playing Tetris just fine?

I am also strongly opposed to the idea of A LIfe, but there is a useful smartphone litmus test I shall now administer:
does my refusal to get one disturb or agitate you in any way? If your answer is Feck No, then carry on. I am absolutely mortified by the number of people that answer Yes and get quite vocal about my need to obey the Prime Directive of the New Conformity. Choko???

Other than the fact that I simply cannot imagine needing or even wanting such a contraption my main objection is that they no longer make me feel like the landing party contacting Spock (who has the con) every time I make or take a call. When they come out with a Smart flip fone, it will be logical for me to get one. My dream Jpn cell phone is one of those old peoples ones with the big numbers and severely restricted functions. And I still wanna fuck the green bitch.

For a starter, they could read the collected works of Søren Kierkegaard on their commute.

Not that I do that, but I have more important things to do, like reading and commenting on a forum that is known for the opinions of foreigners who have a deep understanding of Japan...

And, heck, sometimes I even put some (real) work in when I get bored by that option.

Hmm, Sharp products.

No good experience with them. Break down much too early and inferior performance. Never gonna buy that brand again...

I had a Sharp (Dyson-type) vacuum cleaner. Never worked really well and electric motor broke down in less than 10 years. Where is the time vacuum cleaners lasted an eternity?

I have a Sharp telephone / fax machine with two wireless handsets. Wireless reception is inferior. My house is big compared to the average in Japan and it is steel frame, but it is not huge, so I expect decent performance of such a product. And the rechargeable batteries broke down in a couple of years. And why the hell is this product line called "fappy"?!?

I bought a top-of-the-line Sharp TV at work, but it cannot connect to my Toshiba laptop by HDMI. My cheapo-but-excellent-image-quality Prodia TV at home has no problems with it.

Nope, no Sharp for me anymore.

I had a Sharp laptop that I pretty much beat the crap out of and it kept working for years, but I have heard they have gone the way of Sony. At any rate, if they make one somebody reliable is sure to come out with something similar by the time I get organised enough to give a shiite.

Thanks, Yanpa. My faith has been restored. There was no way such creatures of habit were going to all throw out the baby just because somebody invented new bathwater.

Interesting point, my original point on getting a life is the way people let smartphones & connectivity suck them into "working" on their own time. Though I'm not sure how much work is actually done, a lot is verbiage, poorly communicated and half understood.

Concerning games, I'm not averse to them myself, they can be a way of killing time on a boring commute, but they do suck you in when you could be doing something more interesting. I like reading history books but sometimes find it hard to concentrate with all the helpful announcements going on. Games are more immersive, but I don't learn much playing them, whereas my current tome on Anglo Saxon England is a corker. When I look back to my carefree bachelorhood I do sometimes wish I hadn't spent quite so much time on online shoot em ups, although it was a great way of not spending money on a rainy Sunday.

And finally to address the "life" issue, I think we all have to be aware that we are in danger of becoming exhausted drones.

I don't like the job creep either but I wasn't talking about working during my private time. My job requires me to have meetings outside the office so I spend a lot time on the train during work hours. I'd probably still have a flip phone if my office didn't give me an iPhone though. Now that I have one it is definitely a convenient tool and I like the camera and ability to listen to pod casts or the news during my commute. However, I do make a conscious effort not to be one of those assholes who stares at his phone all the time even when you're having a conversation over drinks and dinner. People have always looked for ways to kill time during a commute though. Before it was newspapers, magazines, books, Walkmans, Gameboys, etc. I don' think that's actually changed much but now everyone is staring into devices that look more or less the same for these activities so it seems like they're all becoming Smartphone zombies.

Nice commentary by you and SJ there on the dangers and the benefits of the infernal machine. I also enjoyed that article. Thanks for that. I have suspected what he is arguing since watching my former focussed colleagues and students turn into gibbering monkeys with the gradual then meteoric rise of cell phonage, texting, and now full interactive online fluid exchange.

Also, on a side note, great to see a man that served his country so well in that morass that was The Vietnam War has retooled and gone on to do such important research. He's come a long way from FEN Saigon, ferschur ferschur

iPhone Hysteria

Postby Yokohammer » Thu Apr 02, 2015 2:35 pm

Despite some serious reservations about where Apple is heading recently, I think they've hit it out of the park for me with the iPhone 6 Plus. The 2-year contract on my Galaxy was up last month, so I switched a few days ago. Very nice. My iPad Mini is already starting to gather dust.

Very good. That's a big home run.

Hope you're not going to ask if a home run is a good thing.

Aha, baseball? Divided by a common language and all that. I was having visions of kiddies crying because their ball had flow outside the playground. Mind you it took me a couple of decades before I was aware that this "3 strikes law" popular with the US incarceration industry was also a baseball metaphor, and not, as I'd vaguely imagined, something to do with failure to light matches.

It's not 'in your face' bugs, it's insiidious crap. On some it's the wifi that goes to shit (mostly 4s) or safarl new creative support of the keyboard who decide to go deaf sometimes. Or the randomnes of the behaviour of the photo library totally changed in 8.0 because fuck you, then reverted to 7.0 behaviour because threads in aople support forum started to threaten the family and kids of the dev team.
Cherry on the cake is the new autocorrct behaviour
As you can guess... I had to disable it.
Cursor management is also still an abomination. And the jailbreak fixes don't work anymore in safari. Despite being flawless in every ther app.

iPhone Hysteria

Postby Yokohammer » Fri Apr 03, 2015 8:10 pm

Compared to my Android phone, which was a disjointed mosh-mosh of diverse concepts that somehow managed to work together most of the time (but not all of the time), the iPhone is a smooth-running, streamlined dream machine.

Autocorrect is always a fucking nuisance though. I doubt that any system is completely bug free.

In Coligny's case autocorrect is probably not the worst option.

Unless of course it autocorrects to a correct but unintended word that is closer to the typed contents than the intended word.
