DoCoMo World Wing Help

I was thinking about signing up for the Docomo World Wing Service where you can use your FOMA phone outside of Japan. The sign up fee is supposed to be free and there are no monthly fees.. but then it's Docomo and I'm sure there are hidden fees. Is anyone else using this and if so, will any FOMA phone work or will you be stuck to that ugly piece of shit NEC 900iG phone? Thanks for the help.
