Hitachi robot navigates its way to take images

Kyodo, Mar. 7, 2006 TOKYO, Japan
Hitachi Ltd. said .... it has developed a robot that moves indoors negotiating its way around obstacles and uses a surveillance camera to take images. The robot, which measures 57 centimeters high and 50 cm wide and weighs 33 kilograms, is powered by a battery to travel at a speed of one kilometer per hour on two tire wheels.

A 'new' security robot announced by leading Japanese company Hitachi actually appears to be a four year-old American-developed product, a US robotics company has claimed.
In a statement issued today, US-based MobileRobots Inc said that the Hitachi robot is "suspiciously similar" to its own Pioneer-DX which went on sale in 2002...more...
