This is a goofy little article that doesn`t say much. Sony`s people are innovative, but I think that is in spite of their corporate culture. They originally thought Playstation was going to fail so they didn`t want the Sony name on it. The Aibo is another product that was the result of a skunkworks team that ignored HQ. And when they recently released a plasma tv they had to do it with another company because they have fallen behind in technology.
All of the copy protection systems currently in use take the same basic approach. What they do is exploit the fact that PC CD drives can read discs with multiple sessions whereas audio CD players for the most part do not. By adding deliberately corrupted or encrypted sessions after the normal audio portion of a CD, PC drives get confused and don`t play the disc or require special software. In the long run such methods won`t be successful for a couple reasons. 1. CD drives can be modified to look at the first session only 2. At some point users have to be able to listen to the music. This makes it possible to record the analog sound output digitally on a PC. Users have already demonstrated that they are willing to put up with slightly lower quality music if it is cheaper.
