Yomiuri: New car navigation system warns of accidents
A new system that uses car navigation software to detect possible accidents and alert drivers via a synthesized voice currently is being tested. The Driving Safety Support System (DSSS) utilizes optical transceivers and cameras, which relay information about cars and pedestrians in the immediate vicinity of a vehicle. There are high expectations for the system; the National Police Agency already has referred to it as "the ultimate system to prevent accidents." I recently rode as a passenger in a car installed with the system in the Odaiba area of Tokyo. When the experimental vehicle approached a T-shaped intersection near the Yurikamome Line's Telecom Center Station, an electronic voice said: "A bicycle is approaching from the left. Please be careful." Simultaneously, the car navigation system displayed an illustrated image of a bicycle. The driver hit the brakes and the car stopped in front of the intersection...People can test-drive the new system at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Koto Ward, Tokyo, until Saturday. Reservations are necessary...more...
