JGov't wants your cell phone

The national government wants to ramp up the recycling of old cell phones so they can collect all of the precious metals found inside the phones. It seems that customers are resisting the call to turn in your old phone. Some state the fear privacy concerns, others want to keep the phone to use as a camera or schedule. I figure it's pretty easy, if the gov't pays you for your phone, a kind of return fee, then people will be glad to return them. But trying to play on people's national loyalty has to be one of the worst ways to want to get people to return their phones. On NHK tonight, the were saying that with the demand for these precious metals and how Japan has few in any of them, in the future they could have to do without, if people don't return their phones, for free of course.

I see a serious cultural divide coming. Those in power who have had power for generations and are "nationalistic" and the rest of the Japanese who want to be left the hell alone. I think the nationalists are in for a rude shock.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

Yepper, got to agree with you. I'm leaving my collection at home (41 dummy phones, 77 real ones) however I'm leaving my collection here in Canada. If some 'return for refund' policy comes into effect, I'll have a family member ship'em out to me.

I think it's not even needed to consider a nationaliSStic side. They build it a the standard strawman.
asshole in charge -"give us your shit for free, slaves"
slaves -"no"
asshole in charge -"OMG WTF BBQ!!??, will somebody think of the japan ?"

Unlike fridge or TV they can't add insult to injury by making people pay for taking back their recyclable appliance.

It's even more insulting now that you actually have to pay for the phones that were proeviously more or less free.

I'm always pissed of when they go crying about the cost of recycling material, like collect of aluminium cans. Sure making alu fra`om bauxite is so much more easier to do fucktards... (hint, alu recycle at 100% rate, the cost of recycle is around 4% of the cost of extracting the same given quantity from bauxite)

Unfortunately, the nationalistic minority make a helluva lot more noise than the leave-us-the-fuck-alone minority, projecting a somewhat biased impression of Japanese nationalism to the casual observer.

If the average Joe here was a bit more aggressive in voicing his or her discontent, we might actually see some positive change.

Of all the intelligence* in the Japanese archipelago, very little seems to have made its way into government.

* To clarify, I am referring to intelligence of the beneficial, non-self-serving kind, as opposed to reap-the-most-personal-benefit smarts.

i've observed this phenomenon in many venues, be it education, municipal affairs or what have you. i like to refer to it as "trickle up incompetence".

Aw, phones are small beer, and they have limited growth potential given the economy and birth rates....now, old people, that's another matter

I think the average Joe is excellent at voicing discontent - within their circle of acquaintances or at work or telling other people how they should act, think, dress or be.

But ask somebody to stand behind these opinions in public or even in a meeting and they crumble like a sand castle.

The noisy nationalists are really only just noisier IMHO and have got over their fear of being heard by more than one person at a time.
