Japan turns to biometrics for passport security
A senior Foreign Ministry official in Japan has confirmed the country plans to implement a program to issue passports using biometric technology...The official did not indicate whether the country would use fingerprint, palm print, voice or iris biometrics.

TOKYO (Reuters) -
Japan will consider using unique biological data about individuals such as fingerprints and facial features to tighten immigration controls ... Japan has decided to introduce passports with chips containing so-called biometrics information next year, and would look into whether to make use of such data in screening foreign visitors....
But Tokyo has not made any decisions yet, given concerns that stricter immigration controls might turn off tourists thinking about visiting Japan and due to criticism by some human rights groups that the use of biometrics was a violation of individual rights. ...

Will this mean that if a citizen is rubbed out in a plane crash but their passport survives, the state can re-make them ala The Fifth Element? :wink:
