Japanese Keitai innovation spreads

Postby Taro Toporific » Tue Feb 25, 2003 3:08 pm

Japanese Keitai innovation, the now banned one-giri(one ring then cut)call*, spreads to Europe...
Japanese missed call scam spreads
A Japanese scam that involves a company calling cell phones and hanging up, causing the owner to call back has migrated to the Isle of Man. All Manx Telecom mobiles have received a call over the last week from an 0871 number.

*"One-giri" refers when your keitai rings once but then stops ringing because other end has hung up. If you check the call history in your phone and call the number back, you are automatically connected to a message system that invites you to a "two-shot" or dating service.

Thank goodness for the FG archives. After 9 months of peace & quiet on my current keitai, I suddenly started getting daily one-giris last week. I forgot exactly what the scam was, though, so of course I searched FG.

And the bad part is ...... ??

Seriously, though, anybody know how I got on the one-giri target list? And how do I get off? Or should I just give in and try out the dating service?

Cool!! I just found out some more about one-giri from the International Adventure Club.
We were about to leave when Jonathan enquired whether the Oba San had any onegiri for sale. She very kindly made us up a couple of fresh salmon onegiri, which we graciously accepted. She insisted we sat in her shop to eat them along with the miso soup and potato salad she had so kindly prepared. We offered to pay as we left but she wouldn't hear of it.

I'm definitely going to call back next time.
