iphone in a lake

Postby Big Booger » Sat Apr 28, 2012 8:38 pm

So my sex maniac gf was taking a video of me giving carp some food.. and the inevitable happens.. her phone went for a swim with the fishes. Anyway one of the clerks fished it out, and I took it home. I put the hair dryer to it, let it run for 10-15 minutes.. most of the water was gone. Some water remained on the camera lens so I hit that area with the dryer.. and it seems to have dried up.. but the phone is not turning on.. I think it has taken a shit..

So right now I have it sitting in a ziplock bag with rice and going to let it sit there for a day or two...

Any other advice? If it is dead, anyway to get it fixed cheap?

Get the batteries out immediately (out of the phone, not your GF), and take apart to dry (the phone, not your GF).

But anyway, you may already be too late.

Well after leaving it in rice, drying it out, and then reconnecting it this morning to a charger, well it works.. I mean I can connect it to a pC, it will come on but the screen is not coming on.... I think we'll go to Softbank shortly.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I am pretty sure (not 100%) that the warranty doesn't cover water-logged iPhones, they do have a certain way of checking with a specialized microscopic camera to view close up detailed information about the phone. If they detect that the phone was in any way submerged in water, in all likelihood, they won't do anything.
My advice to you is just deny, deny, deny, take it from there, keep your fingers crossed and see what happens.

Good Luck

No, they have water sensitive stickers who turn colored if exposed. There was some troubles few years ago because the sensor were too sensitive and keeping the phone in a sweaty pocket was enough to activate them. It's the same kind of tech as used in humidity absorber bags, when all the balls are clear it's ok, when some turn blue or pink it means they are saturated. except those bags can be restaured by a short microwaving.

Well here is how it went down,
Get to Softbank, tell them the iphone screen doesn't work. She confirms the phone is working by calling it, it rings... well, then we get apple's phone number, call apple, confirm serial number.. blah blah... then get email, email has a link to get online mail repair.. we set all that up.

Then we get a loaner iphone from softbank, then on the way home, GF just decides to try her phone out, and low and behold, the damn thing worked... and then we go in reverse to Softbank, return the loaner phone, and call apple to cancel the OUT OF WARRANTY 13800 yen service.. And now she is using he phone...

If you drop it in water, dry it out, and use rice in a sealed bag for 24 hours. Seems to work..

I wonder if we should submerge it in alcohol to get rid of any mineral deposits/corrosion???

Seems to work for Greji, he's routinely soaked in alcohol and appears corrosion free.

From what I've heard, sealing in a bag of rice works best when you can leave it there for 36-48 hours...the longer the better. Glad it worked out for her with the shorter duration.

Well I did make a bag with a towel and used the nozzle of a hair dryer to dry it out for 2 intervals of 15 minutes each. It got it dry and hot and then I put it in the bag of rice over night. That may have helped accelerate the process.

My daughter's Ipod went through the wash -- in the washing machine. I stuck it in a bag of rice for 5 days -- more is better, right? After 5 days in the bag of uncooked rice it worked and still works 3 years after the fact.

I'm sure she enjoyed that Boog. So what did you do to get the iPhone to get it dry?

Had a Nokia go through the washing machine and seemed to work after a dry out. The guy at the Nokia service center said that the circuit board will rust out over time.
Keep the phone if it is working but start looking for a replacement.

There you go! Drop her in water _accidentally_ and get your replacement from Apple. Problem solved.

If you're asking about getting it for her phone then she's probably SOL.

AppleCare+ must be purchased within 30 days of buying the phone. Apparently if you don't live near an Apple Store it is possible to purchase AppleCare+ over the phone though, in which case I guess they can't check your phone (or maybe they make you take it to Softbank to be checked?) I know when I bought it at the Apple Store recently they checked the phone very carefully before taking my 8800yen.

Apple reaction if you send them a water damaged ithingy is "BITCH PLEASE". Submersion indicators in their devices, clever chaps.

tl;dr don't waste your money, not under warranty.

I think that was (is?) the case with standard Apple Care.

Apple Care Plus is a bit different, and for the iPhone (and iPad?) it covers damage due to water and dropping as well as normal warranty issues. For the iPhone you can get it replaced up to twice at a cost of 4200yen per time. It lasts for 2 years from the date of iPhone purchase and must be bought within 30 days of purchasing your phone. You can get it at Softbank when you buy your phone or you can go to your local Apple Store and get it from the Genius Bar.
