OS X Mavericks

Postby Yokohammer » Wed Oct 23, 2013 2:30 pm

All three Macs in the house updated to OS X Mavericks (10.9) with no issues.

Mac users take note: It's a free upgrade for post 2007 hardware running 10.6.3 or later.

So far it seems to be a pretty solid OS.

Hey thanks for the heads up I'll upgrade it now. I've got a big project due tomorrow so wish me luck that this goes smoothly haha. (Maybe not the wisest thing to be doing with a deadline lol.)

I'm working to a couple of deadlines too, all on Friday, but I figured what the heck, and fortunately it all went smoothly.

I did upgrade just one of my Macs first to test it out though ...

Plus I'm tired of discovering that vital apps, that are used only few times a year -but really needed- get broken by these updates...

It all went fine here and took less than 30 minutes (gotta love SSD.) But Parallels which I need for work is giving me issues... Ouch hopefully I can fix it fast I am on the clock as of about 15 mins ago.

Odd. I just did the official "Software Update" last weekend (for Java issues) and the update process did not offer OS X Mavericks (I'm still using 10.6.8 ). Now I am running the Mavericks update with any major glitches so far... :???:

Software update doesn't show it on some computers. Only one of my computers told me it was available, in fact.
But all you need to do is go to the App Store and select it ... which, apparently, you've already figured out.
So far everything is running fine here too.

Hopefully it's hackintoshable. I have a half-completed hackintosh here that a friend tried (and failed...) to build. Going to try to finish it for him soonish. Will be a nice upgrade from his G5.

Meh, evidently the 2008 white Macbook I have sitting around which would be an excellent test bed is not good enough for this...

iTunes? You must have been upgrading from a very old OS (in Apple terms). Later versions, and the version you now have, have an "App store ..." item in the apple menu. Of course you've probably already figured that out. System updates and app updates now all come from the same place, so it has to be easy to access.

Still no problems here. I had to install a fresh Java runtime to launch my ancient copy of Adobe CS3, but that was pretty much automatic and went without a hitch.

Holdouts will eventually have to join the club because stuff will simply stop working as time goes on. The latest versions of iPhoto and iMovie already require Mavericks.

Looks like the power saving features in Mavericks actually work.
Even an old 2007 MacBook Pro gets better mileage.

Arrrrg!
The upgrade broke my elderly versions of Photoshop Elements, SnapistPro, and PGP. The break caused by PGP created an endless loop of unrequited password requests. All afternoon I have been stuck slooooooly recovering from TimeMachine (WTF 6 hours!) to get back to OS 10.6.8 so can remove/upgrade PGP. AND then I'll have do the install of OS Stubborn Cow (that's what a "Maverick" is) all over again. Ain't computering fun!

Maybe try staying more up to date? :p I didn't even know people still used PGP at all. Do you put the key thing in your email sig like people used to do in the 90s?

Seriously ? criticising PGP after all those NSA shit ?

D00d, if everyone used even the simplest form of crypto the amerikuns would not produce enough electricity to run the computer they don't have yet to try to break in every message...

I hate getting caught up in traffic.......so if my wife can use the map app to view traffic congestion from home she can send an alternative route to me via the app straight to my iPhone, and I can get back home to her loving arms............................... and a cold beer sooner! 8-)
