Li-Ion Batteries Banned from Suit Case

The International Civil Aviation Organization has placed a ban on the cargo shipment of lithium-ion batteries on passenger aircraft, following concerns from pilots that they constitute a fire risk.

The UN agency ruling will go into effect on April 1st. The ban is said to be mandatory for the 36 member states of the International Civil Aviation Organization according to Reuters, and it’s expected that others will also follow suit. Many airlines had already stopped accepting cargo loads of batteries on passenger aircraft.

No... this only applies to batteries packed in bulk. Batteries part of consumer electronic devices or phones can still be checked in.

You’ll also be pleased to hear that it doesn’t apply to the batteries you carry in your luggage. That’s because the real concern is the close packing of cells, that can cause a chain reaction if a single battery suffers form thermal runaway.

Whether you would want to check in your electronics is another thing entirely, of course... The "concerns of pilots" they are talking about are actually two 747 freighters which crashed fairly recently as a result of onboard fires caused by pallets of LiPo batteries.

It was the case for me in December last year. Spare batteries for your camera and phone, your keyfob for mobile banking, etc., all in hand carry.
(Currently published restrictions are slightly more relaxed, but you can't put spare batteries in the hold; they must be installed in a device. I don't know if this is yet another change)

And sometimes you can't even have the device in hand carry, leading to a man with a history of throwing phones at people making a prick of himself on social media.

I don't even bother anymore to put my tooth paste in a separate plastic bag, and just leave it in my hand luggage.

My frequent flyer days are long gone and I even haven't seen the inside of an aeroplane for well over a decade. Hearing you guys' stories about it and what the press/webs tell has lead me to believe that flying has become a rather impractical way of transportation.

It is not so impractical so long as you are familiar with the rules. The restriction on liquids ended my "carry three bottles of wine with you each time you enter Japan" days. Putting nail file and nail scissors and toothpaste in the hold has only been an issue for me once, when I was flying on a work project and needed to leave quickly and not wait for baggage claim. I just had to ask another person flying on the project to put them in his luggage for me.

For sure, the jetset glamour days are over. A plane is a bus which flies through the air.

The one fact that always amazes me is, however much we complain about how costly airfares are, it costs me over 20,000 Yen to go 500 Km return (total distance both ways) to the airport from my house, but then just over 100,000 yen to go the next 16,000 Km return. I don't think the alternatives will be as convenient in cost or time.

You may think that flying is impractical, but if you are going a long distance or over water, it is still much better than the alternatives (although I will admit to enjoying the long car ferry journeys available in Japan -- even if they are getting fewer -- if you have the time for it.)
