What is a good SIM only service to use?

Postby AlbertSiegel » Fri Jul 08, 2016 10:31 am

So my contract with Docomo is finally over. I was going to switch to AU since I'm so pissed with Docomo customer service, but I thought maybe I should give some of these other companies a look. I did get my phone (Sony Z1) unlocked by Docomo yesterday. I have until the end of this month to cancel my service and avoid the fee. I'm looking for 1 or 2GB data per month (I don't use much) and unlimited calling. I want to keep my same number. Any advice?

It is not updated so often any more, but this site seems to look into various options http://www.japanmobiletech.com/

I'm guessing that to get an unlimited calling package you possibly need a standard big three provider contract. The site above also looks at having a MVNO for your data and having a separate galapagos phone for voice, which may be the best option.

The standard big three providers are pretty much the same as far as prices go, especially if you are not bundling family members into the contract, which I am guessing you are not if you are considering going from docomo to au.

Note also potential issues of different radio bands and technology between docomo and au: depending on your phone it may not work on the other network. I leave that for you to research.

Thanks for the reply. It's a good page and gave me much info, but I'm still no closer to knowing what my best options are. Does anyone have any personal experience? Someone suggested Rakuten SIM, but my wife has it and I'm not too impressed with it.

What I would like to do it fully quit Docomo right now, then switch to AU, but I want t wait until September for the new iPhone. I wonder if I should just continue with Docomo under a no-contract plan with just basic calling only? This way I can quit without a penalty I think. Any opinion?

Look into Freetel. You pay for what you use and it's pretty cheap.
