Hackers Wrecked the Internet Today Using DVRs and Webcams

The internet has been on shaky footing for the better part of Friday thanks to a large-scale attack on a company that runs a large portion of crucial internet infrastructure. It's still too early to know exactly who is behind the attack, but experts have begun to pin down which devices are doing the bulk of the work. It's not computers, but devices from the so-called Internet of Things. We're talking smart fridges, web cams, and DVRs. It may sound funny, being attacked by refrigerators, but don't laugh. It's actually horrifying.

I wonder what these hackers got out of this. Or was it just a "test"?

When I see something like this, I'm kinda glad I'm closer to being on my way out rather than having to make it through the next few decades.
The world is far too sophisticated for me now.
What a shame the talented people conducting these sorts of attacks can't find somewhere constructive to utilize their obvious skills.
I can take solace that we're at least keeping our rich and privileged people rich and privileged regardless of whether the next U.S. president is misogynist or misandrist.

Targeted Attack in Mexico: DNS Poisoning via Modems

TrendMicro wrote:“Dial ‘M’ for malware” sounds like a good phrase to sum this up…

TrendLabs researchers have received reports of what appears to be an attempt of a massive DNS poisoning attack in Mexico. True to the growing complexity of Web threats, the weapons of choice include social engineering, malware download, pharming, and — here’s the clincher — a DSL modem.

Yes, the attack begins with the exploitation of a known vulnerability in 2Wire modems. The said vulnerability allows an attacker to modify the local DNS servers and hosts. One of the main Internet Service Providers in Mexico offers 2Wire modems to their customers, and it is estimated that more than 2 million users are at risk.

When I first read this, I thought WTF, modems at war  And this was 2008; the technology might have matured since then, and it's not only the ad stalkers and the pokemons...
