Type on your desktop PC with a phone handset?

Via the GIZMODO blog of Sunday, June 15, 2003...

...the Keiboard, a thumb keyboard that plugs into the USB port of a PC so you can tap out messages just like you would on a cellphone handset. Seems like a huge step backwards, but does anyone know if it's easier to input Japanese characters this way rather than on a regular PC keyboard?

Okay, so the rolling keyboards are pretty cool. But what's with the $40 price variation? does it really cost that much more to make a USB version? I could understand a small increase for some PDA that had an unusual connector, but USB?!? Doesn't seem right.
