AH! That's the one! Thanks, BB.

I had some of that during my visit and was trying to remember the name. All I could recall was that it started with an "a." I agreee, it is better than PS.

I am really into the amino drinks - there are a bunch out now. Amino supli, supli amino, Calpis amino supli etc etc etc. Not as salty as the aquarius/pocari sweat things... now if I could only buy some gatorade or lucosade in Japan...

Calpis

Postby kurohinge1 » Wed Jun 25, 2003 12:32 pm

Calpis + lemonade/Sprite + ice (with optional vodka) is nice on a hot day.

For some reason, some gaikokujin friends are initially hesitant about drinking the old "cow piss" ...

Genki drinks

In LoDo Denver's "Sakura Square" all the "Genki drinks" at the Japanese supermarkets are kept behind locked glass cases. When I asked about the drinks, one of the cute san-sei clerks chirped, "Nah, we only sell to tanshin funin junkies."

There is another exercise drink called Amino Vital. Tastes almost like water, but has a slight lemon/citric flavor to it. Totally replenishes the fluids after a workout. I recently switched from Pocari Sweat (and Energen, another brand) to Amino Vital.

wait wait wait a minute!! :x
the second photo on my prestigious display is the glass thing. who do you think i am...??
but,
apart from very rare combini, and ichiran ramen shop in roppongi, i've never been able to find the bottle ones anywhere, like it's some kind of secret or something.
then i saw the add for the ramu-botoru and suddenly i find the can and the bottles in a 100-yen store in shibuya...
where do you get the old glass bottle ones? i think they are even cooler to have in you fridge than the old glass coke bottles with the coca-cola logo embossed in the glass.
ImageImageImageImageImageImage
(images from this nice site)
(+ i don't drink coke so it's really purely for the hype of showing off in front of guests, while at least with the ramune i can drink it too...)

best plce to find ramune is at summer festivals.

It's ALWAYS available there.

I remember the first time I encountered ramune. My girlfriend had to show me how to open the top.

It's already there, although in limited markets. Most specialized Asian markets/grocery stores have them in stock. And Yes, I spent about 15 minutes the first time I bought one trying to twist the damn plastic cap off.

Of course, what really kicks ass is that frozen ice grapefruit drink called Bottle Rock.

it may be in specialised asian markets, but it would be better suited for a walmart type distribution :D

I am sure it would be a smashing success, doesn't even need a name change I think :D

One life's few pleasures in hellish Japanese summer is dipping your arm all the way down to the elbow and grabbing a cold bottle of ramune out ice-&-icewater cooler at a street fair or fireworks. Ahhhhhhh. It almost makes living in crotchrot summertime tolerable.
