Sony warns online buyers of spam scam
ZDNet Jul 14 2003 11:58PM GMT
Sony Electronics has been sending out messages to the customers of its Sonystyle.com retail Web site, warning them of a fraudulent e-mail that asks for personal details. The consumer electronics giant learned earlier this month that an unauthorized mass e-mail with the subject title "Sonystyle user and email address" was being sent to customers...

He's my copy of the scam spam warning...

| Dear Taro:
|
| We have become aware of a fraudulent email message (subject:
| "SonyStyle user and email address") that has been circulating and
| falsely indicates that it is from SonyStyle.com and claims that
| "your user and email address had an error on SonyStyle LLC.
| databases." This email includes a link to a bogus Sonystyle.com
| registration site that asks for your registered username, password
| and email address.
|
| The fraudulent e-mail does not appear to be targeted to
| SonyStyle.com customers, nevertheless we wanted to make you aware of
| it in case you receive it.
|
| The fraudulent email is not from Sony and if you receive it you
| should disregard it and delete it. If you have provided the
| information requested in the email, you should immediately go to the
| SonyStyle.com website and click on "view account" at the top of
| the page to change your registered username and password and you
| should contact the issuing bank of the credit cards you have used
| for purchases on SonyStyle.com. If you use the same username or
| password for any other services or applications, we recommend that
| you consider changing them for those other services/applications
| as well.
|
| Sony is currently investigating the origin of the fraudulent email
| and is working with the appropriate law enforcement authorities.
|
| Please be assured that Sony takes great measures to ensure the
| security of our systems and our customer data and have no indication
| of any compromises to our site or the security of our data.

The same scam is being attempted against other e-commerce sites such as PayPal and EBay.

Catching a heap of ecommerce newbies I am sure.

The "cool" part of the Sony warning is I did NOT give Sony Style my email address(es)... I gave my throwaway adresses to Sony's FromHannawho then via their doubious Privacy Policy decided for me that I wanted to "Opt-in" to Sony Style.

Oh well, I only gave FromHanna fake addresses and UFO-based personal info anyway.

BTW: Has anyone else noticed that FromHanna has changed for a very sleepy ex-pat information site to a casbah of Sony marketing failures? You gotta love that angry-fruit-salad user interface they adopted on the site.

Dumb question:
The above url yielded the following message which seems "real" enough to me. What's the tip-off to this being fake besides the topic of account renewal?
You have requested an outdated version of PayPal. This error often results from the use of bookmarks. To enter the PayPal website please click on the Welcome tab.
If you are already logged in, please click on the My Account tab to continue.

What's the tip-off to this being fake besides the topic of account renewal?

You mean apart from the mangeled grammar, incorrect capitilization and obvious redirection script buried in the link - not much I guess :D

Well what happens is that for a short time that site gets re-directed to the scammers site until Paypal cottons on and grabs the url back. As it is now it has been santizied by Paypal.

Actually I just tried it again and the link has now been disabled.

Here's is the hidden redirect
