Anyone know a good web hosting service?

Postby Caustic Saint » Sun Aug 10, 2003 3:04 am

Hey all. Just trying to find a decent, ad-free host. I'd like about 25megs of space, a high monthly bandwith allotment and a reasonable price. I'd say about $5-10 per month. I'm looking to put up a personal page, kinda blog-like, but one where I can also host my own pics and video clips.

Anybody know of a company (or companies) providing anything along these lines?

20 GB per month should be more than adequate at this point, but the more I can get for the money, the better it is. The server can be pretty much anywhere, just so long as I can talk to them via email (or even the phone)) in English. I'd also want to be able to pay for the service via a US credit card.

I could host you. I have a few servers set up on an unlimited bandwidth DSL line in Alaska, so movies and the like wouldn't be much of a problem, though it might be a little sluggish at times. I'd do it for free, since I'm paying $70 a month for the line already I might as well get as much use out of it as possible, but any money you could offer would be put towards upgrading the server machine, and maybe investing in a faster line. Let me know if you're interested, and I'll set you up with FTP access. The server has PHP and MySQL installed if you need them, and I would consider other server side stuff if you have some sort of special requirements.

i recommend this host:
http://www.ipaska.com/plans.htm

talk to him over email or aim and he will craft you something unique as far as a plan goes. his servers are located at ThePlanet, which has some of the best bandwidth, and his response times are great. (knows him through forums)

Those deals look pretty good, Dev, thanks for the link. I won't be sure exactly what my needs will be until I start shooting video and putting some stuff together, but I've got his site bookmarked now.

I found a site that I know the owner personally:

http://www.emaxhosting.com/

They have a 3.95 starter plan that gives you 50Mb space and 2GB bandwidth.

They have a 5.95 plan and an 8.95 plan too!

http://www.emaxhosting.com/hosting.html

They are hosted in New Jersey and provide a great service. If you pay in advance they offer free months depending on how far in advance you pay.

BUt that ipaska.com is more competitive I think.

I've used ICDsoft.com for my own site and several sites for clients. They have servers in hong kong and the u.s. Very fast customer service by email (minutes) when necessary, but I never really have any problems.

I found them by researching ratings on some websites so apparently others have had similarly positive experiences with them.

$50/year for 333mb, 5 subdomains, 5gig data transfer, webmail, php4, perl, c++, etc.

Once you sign up one site, you can get subsequent accounts for only $40/year!

Throw in another $5 or $10 and they'll handle our domain name registration as well.

domains are cheap.. ~$7-8 a year. there are some better deals out there that I know of, but the one i linked is the most reliable so far and the owner is more than jsut some kid with a rackshack box. "professional" grade companies will rip you a new one for their services because they can get away with it. if you need something fast and easy while you get started, nothing beats this one though... http://www.addaction.net . $10 setup fee, then free for 6 months with no obligation. 500MB and 10GB respectively. to be honest, just shopping around the web isn't going to help that much. good cheap hosts are gotten by knowing people... i am currently on a shared rackshack with no resrictions for $5/month... 2.5gb of space and 25gb of transfer (sorry it's full :P ). best deals are usually found on the tech forums where we all want something good for cheap ^^

this one just came along, so i will post it here.. http://hilpert.joako.net/step_one.php?gid=3

person has a decent rep, but I am pretty sure that it is just a rackshack box judging by the server specs... not a bad thing though :?

Dev, thanks for all the good info. That addaction deal looks great. I may have to give them a shot. And with the 6 months free, that's just $10 to try them out. Damn near too good to pass up.

I'm reviving this thread because I just learned of another hosting service with decent packages - NavMonkey.net. Good prices and even a 20% off deal through Oct. 10.

Domain registration (.com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .us) is only $6.95/year.

Oh, and the aboive-mentioned addaction.net appears to have gone bust.

http://addaction.net/ returns

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

heh, they charge $5 extra a month for having your own domain, claim it costs $70 to register a domain, and claim to offer "unlimited" bandwidth. also, they charge extra for stupid things such as mysql. no uptime guarantee either :P

"extras"

I've been looking around and "extras" can be a problem many hosting services.

One of the typical extras on other hosting services was to say "mysql is available"---after you sign up you could discover mysql was "available" at additional charge. Sheesh.

The NavMonkey plan I'm looking at offers 2 MySQ: Databases.

Truth be told, I have no idea what they're used for. I'm just going to be doinng simple HTML pages and whatnot.

You need them to run a sites like the FG or Blogs that have lots of reader comments, images, etc. Almost all Blog and News-site systems require a database system, yuck. However, to make things ultra-simple, you could the XML/HTML commenting system Pivot like one of the FG's own uses at his site, Tokyo-Genki.com. Pivot's commenting system keeps everything in clean XML format so you can be VERY organized like a fancy-pants database but at the same time very simple like plain old HTML/XML files.

Not sure if you're still looking, but mysitespace.com is a decent place, I use it for my own site. Fairly cheap, okay customer service, weekly backups. Not amazing, but its cheap and you get what you pay for, eh? That said I'm still pretty happy with them. Earlier in the year they had some "problems" and the server my site was on got deleted three times. The first time I got bumped up to the next service level for free, and by teh third time they had implemented backups so it wasn't much of an issue.

I've had good experiences with phpwebhosting.com- pretty prompt support, free mysql, 120mbs disk space, unmetered bandwith for about $10/month.
It's what

Does unmetered mean unlimited? I wasn't aware anyone still did that. Reminds me of simplenet, which before it got bought by Yahoo was unlimited space/unlimited bandwidth for $10/month.

I suggest you check out IchibanWeb.com. They offer 25M of space with 1.0 GB of bandwidth for US$3.95/month. That includes one mail account, 50 forwarding mail accounts, MySQL, PHP and UNIX/Apache. Also, free telephone support (in the US, but that's cheaper than a local call if you have Yahoo BB). No ads or other crap--just good service.

IchibanWeb.com also has domain registrations: $7.85/year for .com and $99 for .jp. Many other domains also available (uk, cc, ws, info, biz, us, etc.)

All in English.

http://www.hostitcheap.com

$5 per month
$12 for domain registration

500 megabytes of space
10 gigabytes transfer
unlimited emails
10mysql databases
php
mysql
phpmyadmin
more than enough of everything

I was skeptical about these guys at first, and one of my other web hosts actually tried to talk trash to me about these guys, but in one year's time, I have had zero down time. They work like champs. Their customer support isn't bad either.
