DVD Burners for Mac

Postby thamidget » Thu Oct 16, 2003 1:19 am

So... I've got an older G4 w/o superdrive, and really want a DVD burner without sinking too much yen into the old beast.
Been looking around all the most obvious places in Tokyo, and there seems to be quite a disparity in prices, features, etc. One burner that caught my eye was a Logitech firewire DVDR,RW,+,-, and all that going for about 28,000. The box's only piece of english text was one saying "Domestic use only. Support for Japanese OS/Language only......!" etc. This sort of thing gives me cold feet.
So, does anyone have any experience with this piece of gear? Any recommendations on others? Do firewire burners kick the crap out of USB? Any sage advice would be much appreciated.
Thanx in advance!

The "Apple brand" SuperDrive is really a Pioneer. You can fool Mac software into thinking a Pioneer DVD-R is a SuperDrive. These can be found easy. No instructions or software needed. Should work just fine under OSX.
If only Bill Gates had a penny for every time Windows crashed......oh wait... he does!!

Firewire is only the way to go as Ultra said.

Don't worry too much about the "Domestic use only. Support for Japanese OS/Language only." You most likely are not gonna call up in Japanese and ask for help anyway. The software that comes with the firewire burner is most likely JPN junkware, which you just throw away and use TOAST for X. Also, OS X has built-in burning tools which will let you do all the basics right out of the box just by plugging it in. Several of my friends have just plugged in their Sony firewire burner and started burning straight from their iMovie, iPod, etc. software.

Write down the exact Logitech model number and go to http://www.Logitech.com see whether there are English manuals and firmware available for it (most likely there's support on the Logitech site).

PS: If you buy, pleeease tell all of us how it works out for you. I''m in the market for a burner for my PowerBook 667 too. I've got 20+ GB of MP3s on dozens of CDR that need to be burnt on a few DVDs.

Wow, thanks... one thing I forgot to mention is that I'm still in OS9 land for several reasons. What issues does this raise as far as drivers, firmware & all?

Ooops. I meant "Logitec", not "Logitech". "Logitec.jp" has basically no english info!
