That site refers Chinese-blocked folks to, " Anonymouse links for blocked blogs" which provides very poor privacy---it beats the filter but leaves an openly visible IP log. :?

Since I'm here

Postby Socratesabroad » Fri Mar 19, 2004 5:09 am

As someone who's experiencing the Chinese Internet blocking now that I live here, I'd appreciate any advice about avoiding this problem...

I've noticed that Google's cache function is disabled (just like the firewall where I used to work, so I'm used to it), but a few sites do get blocked now and then that would seem to have nothing to do with China. I think there was something on FG a while back with Quick Time files and I couldn't get any of the pages to come up.

Well, feel free to offer advice (and if you're afraid of violating any posting rules, just PM me...) or suggestions - besides moving!

Heh, China starts taking down blogs while Japan's NTT Communications signs
a deal with the Movable Type guys to power their upcoming Blogzine service. Coincidence? Well yeah, probably...

Still working on the circumvent

Postby Socratesabroad » Wed Mar 24, 2004 11:45 pm

Internet cafes (well, mostly smoking dens) may be banned right near grade schools, but they are all over the place here in China. No ID required, so anybody can get in (mostly a high school/college crowd from what I saw before I got my ADSL hooked up).

That said, I'm glad I have my home ADSL - the smoke and unfalteringly loud game sounds were not pleasant...
