"The Undead Zone"

SLATE / June 9....a paradox that's afflicting today's games: The more "realistic" they get, the creepier and weirder the human characters look. I cite the theories of Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori thusly: ... The more humanlike his robots became, the more people were attracted to them, but only up to a point. If an android become too realistic and lifelike, suddenly people were repelled and disgusted. The problem, Mori realized, is in the nature of how we identify with robots. When an android, such as R2-D2 or C-3PO, barely looks human, we cut it a lot of slack. It seems cute. We don't care that it's only 50 percent humanlike. But when a robot becomes 99 percent lifelike—so close that it's almost real—we focus on the missing 1 percent. ...

That's what happens, "when a robot becomes 99 percent lifelike—so close that it's almost real—we focus on the missing 1 percent. "

What did ya almost projectile-vomited in the lap of your Japanese compadres, as the first George Bush did while supposedly under a voodoo spell?

When talking about androids I used to first think about Asimov`s Sci-Fi Novels, followed by The Terminator and Data from Star Trek .. but now and for ever more...

Its ALL Awesomo baby !

Cartman hatches his next genius plan for picking on Butters when he becomes AWESOM-O. In this week's episode, Cartman dresses up like a robot, calls himself AWESOM-O, and moves in with Butters. His plan is to learn all of Butter's innermost secrets and then use them against him. While Butters is thrilled to have found a new best friend, the Army believes AWESOM-O is some new secret weapon, and Hollywood is after the phony robot to develop their next big blockbuster.

That is true of human-to-human contact when it comes to foreign languages. Find someone with basic competency in your language and you'll probably (big probably) cut him/her some slack because you will think "foreigner speaking my language". When that same foreigner gets fluent, you'll notice the mistakes or often take things the wrong way because you'll assume the speaker intended to say things that way.

On a couple of occasions, I've felt the temperature drop sharply when a fuent english-speaking Japanese friend calls out "Liar!", meaning to say "Uso!" or similar.
