My First Car - 1967 Datsun PL 411 Sedan

Postby mr. sparkle » Sun Jun 20, 2004 5:42 am

Here is a shot of the first car that I ever owned. It's a 1967 Datsun PL 411 Sedan. This would be the PERFECT Pongi Mobile - but alas, they are very rare nowadays.

I earned the money slaving at a TGI Friday's for at least a year. I remember my dad wouldn't let me have my license--so there the car sat in the street in front of the house for at least 3 months before I could even drive it. He made me wait until I was 17, although I bought it when I was 16. That was agony!

My friends all thought it was not such a cool car, but I thought it was PIMP. Unique at the very least. It was decked out with some mags, and a sunroof which were already aboard. I also blacked out the grill. The 1300cc engine was rather small - but I custom fabricated a top draft weber carb and that little thing screamed. My friends had a '71 Datsun 1200 and another had a BMW 1600. I guess we were the only kids into tuning J cars and small sedans at the time (about 1981). We would race up and down Highway 9 (twisty mountain road) after school every day. We'd also have races to Santa Cruz too over Highway 17. Great fun!

I wish I would've kept the car, but I eventually blew the headgasket and sold it to some Indian guys for $400 after dumping some Bars Leak into the engine. DANG! I shoulda put a SSS engine in there and lowered it out! It's way cooler looking than a boxy 510. Now the PL411 is one of the rarest Datsuns around. In fact, I've never seen another one on the road since then. I've seen a beat up Bluebird station wagon, though.

After the 411, I got a real man's Datsun. The 1971 Datsun 240Z - probably the finest sports coupe ever made in its era. It was black and with gold spoke rims. It looked very similar to this one:

I miss the ride, but I got into trouble with too many speeding tickets.

When I'm rich and famous, I'm gonna employ Taro to do a ground up restoration of a '71 or '72 240Z. Waddya say, ol' boy? :D

BTW, Taro, do you have any photos of your restored Z? I'd like to see your handywork!

DATSUN became NISSAN, right?

Ahhh, my candy-coat, GOLD '72 240Z with ground effects and spollers: PIMPING!
Sad to say all my photos are on the Burning Tree ranch just off the the ol' Santa Fe trail (that sounds real exotic but actually it's 'bout a mile from "Bowling for Colubine" highschool).

I also had a 1979 280Z 2+2 that I bought new but it was a slower than 3-legged dog and I swapped it with my mom's 79 Cellica which was HOT.

Let's see I can't get some 8M pixel digicam pix of those photographs made and emailed to me this week. My 76 MGB resortation is finished an is coming back from the Mexican upolstery shop---the family will be sending me pix of the completed work to prove there are no yellow-&-black dingleballs hanging from tuck-n-roll lepoard skin seats. :P

My first car was a Datsun 120Y - white sedan.. I worked for two christmas holidays fitting snotty kids school shoes at Myer to buy it when I was 17.

That was a great car and took me all through university.

Sold it for nearly what I paid for it as it after 3 years.. great great car.

BTW in NSW (Oz) "Myers" became "Grace Bros" and is now "Myers" again !

Anyway, my first car was also a white Datsun - a 1969 Datsun 1000.

It could go 0 to 100 kmh in .... 1 week !

This one's the right shape but obviously faster (being red).

*Long-time lurker, first time poster*

Ahh, Mr. Sparkle, you've brought back many fond memories. My first car was the Datsun 260C metallic green, with the straight six under the hood, same as in the advertisement below. It's an ugly car, as my friends often reminded me, but it sure could move when the hammer was dropped :D.

And as we're talking about what we had to do to get our Datsuns - 3 years of part-time waiting tables.
ImageImage

When that died (cracked cylinder head) I moved up to the Datsun 260Z. It had the same engine, more or less, no power steering, no power windows, but that car was sweet to look at and could take any curve that Melbourne saw fit to offer. At 20 something years old, driving that machine I felt like the love-child of a threesome between Knight-Rider, James Bond and the Dukes of Hazzard. (maybe that's a foursome, I'm confused now) Sadly, I'm pretty sure that the 260Z was solely responsible for any pussy that I got during the 80's. :? :)
Image

After the 260Z was bequeathed to a needy family member (i.e., he wasn't getting any:D ) I went through a number of cars (a Honda Prelude and a 190E MB) which were both excellent cars, but I've come full circle now back to the same design as the 260Z, or as close as we can get these days given that Datsun is no more.
Image

BTW Mr. Sparkle and Taro - have you seen the movie "Bruce Almighty"? Thers's lots of memories there. :D
